CCS Player of the Year DELSHAWN MITCHELL, RB/DB, WILCOX

Wilcox's Delshawn Mitchell dedicated his senior year to his late aunt Lacresia, who died May 11 of cancer. And oh what a season it
was for the 6-foot, 190-pound senior.
Mitchell rushed for 1,747 yards and 18 touchdowns in 2013 and caught eight passes for 121 yards and two scores. He also made 3.5 tackles
per game, had four tackles for loss, three interceptions, recovered three fumbles, caused one fumble and averaged 12.2 points per game.
That excellence didn't go for naught either as Wilcox (9-1, 6-1) earned an SCVAL-De Anza tri-title, along with Los Gatos and Milpitas.
For his efforts, Mitchell is the Prep2Prep Central Coast Section Player of the Year.
"He's an excellent player and a good kid," Wilcox coach Dan Brown said. "He's been through a little with his family and all, but he
was a four-year varsity letterman who rushed for over 4,000 yards (4,138). He's a three-sport athlete who runs a sub-11 100 and a 48-flat (400 meters)
and can dunk a basketball. He's competitive and athletic and a three-sport athlete - you don't see that much anymore."
Just this past weekend Mitchell played for Wilcox in a basketball on Friday night and then competed in the Literacy Classic All-Star football
game on Saturday night at San Jose City College.
On a football field he's almost a man among boys, given his wondrous athleticism.
"He has another gear, like Deion Sanders," Brown said. "He'll be running and it's almost like he's toying with you and then you try to
tackle him and he accelerates and he's gone. He can also catch the ball - he's a pretty good receiver coming out of the backfield."
Mitchell and Palo Alto quarterback Keller Chryst were named co-Players of the Year in the SCVAL-De Anza, though Wilcox clearly had a
better season than the Vikings.
"It was a great season," Mitchell said. "I think the highlights for me were beating Palo Alto and Los Gatos. They're rivals
of ours and we hadn't beaten them in a couple of years. Against Palo Alto I had three touchdowns and over 220 yards."
Added Mitchell: "This year was better than last season - I had more yards and fewer carries."
His three-plus year varsity career was stellar any way you cut it. He rushed for 4,138 yards during that time and also
excelled as a defensive back.
Unlike many athletes in this era of specialization, Mitchell just careens from one sport to the next. He was an all-league basketball
player last season and is a blur on the track team, with personal bests of 22.3 seconds in the 200 meters and 49.4 in the 400.
"Playing three sports helps me stay in shape and track improves my (running) technique," Mitchell said.
The Charger standout is being recruited by San Jose State and said it doesn't matter to him whether he plays offense or defense at the
next level. He played running back in the all-star game on Saturday night and averaged about five yards per carry.
"When he got the offer to play in that Literacy game, a lot of kids might not have because of basketball," Brown said. "But he played
in the football game and that's just him. He's old school."
