NCS Player of the Year
IVAN RABB, F, BISHOP O'DOWD

Just about every high school basketball program across the country has that one player who has amazing talent on and off the court. However, Bishop O’Dowd junior forward Ivan Rabb puts that talent on an entire different level, as the No. 1 recruit for the class of 2015 has won this year’s Prep2Prep North Coast Section Player of the Year award.

“Getting this award really means a lot to me,” said Rabb. “Honestly there are so many other players that could have received it, but I was the one chosen. I feel really blessed to achieve one of my goals as a player.”

Rabb, a 6-10 forward, had a record-breaking season, averaging over 25 points, 15 rebounds, and eight blocks per game. Rabb put the young O’Dowd team on the national stage for the first time in program's history finishing the season at No. 10 (MaxPreps). Rabb easily carried the Dragons through Northern California Open Division tournament, which eventually led to a loss against the 2014 National Champions, Mater Dei (Santa Ana) in the state finals.

Rabb’s success did not just start this season. As a sophomore, he averaged just below this season stats with 25 points, 13 rebounds and eight blocks per game. Even as a freshman, he was still able to record seven points, seven rebounds and three blocks per game off the bench.

Ivan Rabb (Bishop O'Dowd)
“Ivan’s performance has changed tremendously over the past three years,” said senior Parker Hagmaier. “He has always been talented player, but he is now on a different level.”

After last season, Rabb not only grew physically, but he also become a much stronger and smarter player. Rabb was dominant in the post this season, as his much improved jump shot made it nearly impossible for defenders to do anything but foul him. That was not a great idea however, as his 70 percent free-throw percentage was third highest on team this season.

“Complete team player,” said Bishop O’Dowd head coach Lou Richie. “He is one of the most unselfish players that I have been around. Particularly considering how high-level he is.”

Rabb had huge standout games, like against undefeated rivals Berkeley in early January which had major WACC Foothill League playoff ramifications. Rabb was able to help struggling O’Dowd squad with an amazing triple double, as he recorded 27 points, 12 blocks, and 10 rebounds.

“We are now a national program and he has been a key to that,” said Richie.

Another one of Rabb’s finest games came in the Northern California Open Division finals, and on an injured ankle, Rabb was able to record 26 points, 13 rebounds, and six blocks against Capital Christian at Sleep Train Arena. Capital Christian came into the game undefeated against all Northern California teams except O’Dowd.

Rabb also had 29 points and 14 rebounds against El Cerrito in the NCS Division III championship. Rabb was named MVP and brought O’Dowd its third consecutive NCS title.

In the past two seasons, Rabb also received a gold medal for the 16-and-under USA team, and a MaxPreps first-team honor for the Class of 2015. Rabb is clearly on track to being named to the prestigious McDonald's All-America team next season, which would make him the first in school history on the men's side.

“He’s a leader, works hard, talented, and is extremely humble,” said Rabb’s right hand man Shane Farley. “He’s everything you want in a star player and he’s only a junior. I know that he will continue to mature and get better on the court and I’m confident O’Dowd will be even better next season.”

Next year, Rabb will try to bring O’Dowd its first state title since 1981, and with the help of Paris Austin, it will not be a shock to anybody if their dream were to come true.

As a junior, Rabb has been offered by every top basketball program in the country, with the help of a 3.2 GPA, has already received offers from Arizona, Cal, Connecticut, Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina, NC State, Ohio State, Stanford, and UCLA. Rabb is still uncommitted and has yet to offer any hints on where he might wind up.
