NCS Senior of the Year
CAL STEVENSON, OF/P, KENNEDY

One of the best axiom of sports is speed kills. Cal Stevenson, from Kennedy-Fremont, is the perfect example of that principle. Stevenson has been named Prep2Prep North Coast Section Senior of the Year.

In the Titans' season-ending playoff loss to Alhambra, Stevenson walked, stole second, stole third and stole home for Kennedy’s only run in a 6-1 loss.

And oh by the way, he pitched four innings of relief allowing no runs and striking out six.

Stevenson had a .510 batting average, 11 RBIs, five triples and two home runs on the year, with 23 stolen bases. On the mound he had a 1.13 ERA with 92 strikeouts. He’ll be playing at the University of Nevada in Reno.

Stevenson was also recruited by Kansas, Washington and Utah.

“Jay Johnson (Nevada head coach) was the reason I chose Nevada,” Stevenson said. “I really like him. I felt like he was the right man for this job, and I want to come in and be an impact player. I couldn’t say, ‘No.’ He really helps guys get to the next level. I thought he was the right guy for Nevada and will take the program to the next level.”

Stevenson said he expects to play the field and pitch for the Wolf Pack.

“He wants me to be a two-way guy,” Stevenson said. “If I can do both in college I’d like to do both. I want an opportunity at the next level either way.”

Stevenson feels at home on he mound.

"Honestly, I feel great (on the mound), I know if I threw strikes and let them put the ball in play, I know my defense would pick me up," said Stevenson.

The lefty hit .435 during his junior season in 2013 with nine extra-base hits in 69 at-bats. He also pitched 13.1 innings, striking out 31 and not allowing a run. He went 3-0 and recorded four saves in relief.

Also considered: Ryan Anderson, Foothill; Noah Bremer, Berkeley; Denis Karas, Campolindo; Channing Nesbitt, Bishop O’Dowd; Grant Meylan, Clayton Valley Charter; Shea Sbranti, Freedom.

NOTE: We would like to thank our readers for all of the nominations you sent in for the season-ending NCS baseball awards. It is a daunting task to narrow down our selections to just the top few as we recognize there are lots of great players who make contributions on the diamond that are not necessarily well-documented but mean a great deal to the success of their teams. We salute all of the players that have made this a wonderful season of NCS baseball.
