P2P NCS Baseball Honors
An outstanding season for Granada outfielder Casey Soltis was made even more special when he was drafted by the Miami Marlins. (Granada Baseball)

NCS Player of the Year
CASEY SOLTIS, OF, GRANADA

Casey Soltis didn’t know when he would be drafted in the MLB draft and and certainly didn’t know what team would use a draft pick on him. But the last team he would have picked would have been the Miami Marlins in the fifth round, the team farthest away from his Livermore home.

"It was just a great moment," Soltis said. "One I'll always remember."

Soltis was the first East Bay high school player taken in this year's MLB Draft. The Granada High outfielder was named Prep2Prep’s North Coast Section Baseball Player of the Year.

On June 6th at 11:36am, he got the official word that he was the second pick of the 5th round. “It was a bit of a shock for a second because no one had called, but after a bit you could say I was pretty pumped,” he explained.

The 6-foot-1, 195-pound Soltis, was the 137th overall selection. This season for the Matadors, he hit .353 with a .472 on-base percentage, scored 27 runs and had 16 RBIs in 26 games. Soltis also had 13 stolen bases on the year. He was named EBAL MVP.

"We’re all pretty pumped up," Granada coach Corrigan Willis said. "He’s a tremendous guy and had a great season for us. His plate discipline was really great this year."

Willis said Soltis has a difficult decision to make since he's also committed to Oregon. But for now, there's excitement at Granada.

"I think it’s a great day for Casey and his family and Granada baseball," Willis said. "All of the coaches were pumped up.”

The left-handed hitting Soltis, who is committed to Oregon, "uses a quick, short swing to make consistent contact to all fields. He has some raw power to tap into in the future, which should help his offensive profile in the corner outfield spot. He runs well and has the kind of strong arm you like to see in right," according to a scout on MLB.com.

Soltis had an incredible summer season, being one of the top performers in the Area Code Games while on the Oakland A’s. Soltis earned the Offensive Player of the Day award in early August and he entered the 2014 season as one of the top all-around high school players in Northern California.

Also considered: Joe DeMers, College Park; Cal Stevenson, Kennedy.
