Katy Taylor's Trey Herrmann placed on administrative leave

September 20, 2017

Katy Taylor head football coach Trey Herrman has been placed on administrative leave, effective immediately until further notice. Katy ISD announced the move on Tuesday, but released an amended statement on Wednesday.

The media statement reads...

"On Tuesday, September 19, 2017 parents and guardians of the Taylor High School Football Team were notified that their head coach was placed on administrative leave until further notice. The leave is unrelated to his role with students. In his absence, Katy ISD Assistant Coach Joe Sheffy will serve as the interim football coach. Sheffy is a certified, highly experienced individual who is well versed on the needs of a team. Katy ISD is committed to its students and will do everything necessary to ensure their continued success during this transition. Because this is a personnel matter the District is unable to provide additional information at this time."

According to Dennis Silva II of the Katy Times, no one within Katy ISD is able to speak on the situation due to legal reasons. However, Herrmann's team has been led to believe that their coach will not return to coach football at Taylor High School. Taylor DE and Texas A&M commit Max Wright took to Twitter on Tuesday night to express his gratitude to Coach Herrmann for helping him as an individual and growing the program. Wright added that he did not know why Herrmann was placed on leave. Several other Taylor players shared their appreciation for Herrmann via social media, as well.

The mood around Taylor High suggests that Herrmann will not return. However, students, faculty members and media are left scratching their heads as to why he's on leave. Katy ISD made it a point to say that the leave is unrelated to his role with students and no legal records of an arrest have been found, the situation has taken a baffling turn.

Taylor lost its season opener on Sep. 15 to Magnolia, 35-26. Taylor had been scheduled to open up its season two weeks prior, but due to Hurricane Harvey, those games were cancelled. Herrmann was leading the charge for the Mustangs during the Magnolia game as he kicked off his fourth year as head coach. He accumulated a 21-14 record since his hiring in 2014.

Herrmann's interim, Joe Sheffy, has 15 years of prior head coaching experience. Sheffy seems the most fitting man for the job as Katy ISD searches for a probable replacement. Sheffy, who has decades of experience in Katy ISD, was a familiar face to the district. He coached at Mayde Creek from 1992-2006, where he finished with a record of 67-86-2. The Mustangs are set to take on Fort Bend Austin on Thursday night.
