MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA - The wild West Catholic Athletic League continued to live up to its name Friday night as the Lancers of St. Francis upset the Serra Padres, 41-34.
St. Francis took advantage of every Serra mistake, scoring on all Padre turnovers (a fumble in the third, and an interception by Riley Quinn), as as well as capitalizing on their seven penalties, which totaled 75 yards.
“We believe that we’re as good as everyone in the WCAL. We knew that if the ball rolled our way once, that we were going to seize the opportunity and we were going to win,” said senior Landon Baty.
Baty, who was only expected to play defense due to a dislocated shoulder in Thursday’s practice, filled in for an injured Alex Andrighetto in the second half, rushing for 112 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries. Andrighetto, who took most of the carries in the first half, rushed for 98 yards, including a 30 yard touchdown run midway through the third, where he seemingly made every Serra defender miss on the way to the end zone.
Transfer quarterback Will Fischer-Colbrie continued his stellar senior campaign, completing 8 of 11 passes for 149 yards and two touchdowns.
“My receivers did a great job. We set the pass up really well with play-action and a strong running game. For the most part, my pocket was strong, and everything was just clicking,” said Fischer-Colbrie.
Serra’s running game was led by standout back Kava Cassidy, who ran for 139 yards and a touchdown on 19 attempts. Cassidy was not stopped for a loss the entire game.
Matthew Fa’aita guided the Padres through the air, completing 7 of 15 passes for 144 yards and three touchdowns. Four of his incomplete passes came late in the fourth when attempting to mount a comeback, but all four throws fell to the turf, causing a turn over on downs. St. Francis scored, starting the drive on their 15-yard line.
“This is an evenly matched league all across the board. St. Francis did a better job on the little things tonight and that was the difference in the game,” said Serra coach Patrick Walsh.
With the loss, Serra drops to 4-1 in the WCAL and 6-2 overall.
“Its week 9, everyone’s tired, the days are getting shorter, and we just have to play better football. If we do that, then hopefully we can come out successful against Riordan next Saturday.”
The Padres take on the host Crusaders at 1 p.m.
"Our kids came out and battled. We finally got a break or two; we competed like we do every week. I’m very proud of how we performed, both offensively and defensively; that’s a very good football team,” said Lancers coach Greg Calcagno.
The Lancers (6-2, 3-2) travel to south San Jose next week to play the Warriors of Valley Christian. St. Francis, Valley Christian and Bellarmine are all tied for third place.
