Mulvane recovers from tough loss to down Augusta

September 15, 2013

AUGUSTA, KS - The Mulvane Wildcats recovered from a tough loss at Chanute last week to defeat the host Augusta Orioles, 39-7, in a non-league game Friday night.

The Wildcats (1-1) utilized a dominating running game to seal the victory. Mulvane senior running back Michael Mason once again wowed the fans by rushing for 234 yards and six touchdowns.

Though the Wildcats were on top of their game, Augusta was not shut out completely. With seven seconds left in the game, Augusta junior Dustyn McEachern ran the ball into the end zone on a 3-yard run, finally putting some numbers up for the Orioles. After a 33-20 win at Circle High School last week, this loss for Augusta (1-1) was a tough blow.

Turnovers have plagued the Wildcats this season, with seven in the first five quarters of the season.

“Offensively, we eliminated a lot of mental mistakes, and Coach [Daniel] Myears just called the right plays at the right time,” said Mason. “Our defense really stepped up and controlled the run game and pass game. We did a much better job of containing the outside.”

The Wildcat starting offensive line was made up of senior Isaiah Evans, junior Brent Martin, junior Tyler Young, senior Logan Adams, and senior Bryant Belden, with junior Landen Stewart at tight end. Toward the end, younger players graced the field for Mulvane, like sophomore Tyce Miller. The line stepped up their game, helping the Cats go all the way for a win.

“It was a great feeling to have our hard work pay off and to play some good ole Wildcat Football. Just know you can be expecting to hear Coach (Dave) Fennewald’s victory chant many more times this year,” said Belden.

The Wildcats will play Buhler at home this Friday. Augusta will play Wellington at home.
