CCS softball Division 3 semifinal preview

Here is a brief look at the CCS Division 3 softball semifinals:

No. 2 Capuchino vs No. 3 Live Oak

Tuesday 6:30 pm

Capuchino High School

How they got here: Capuchino trounced Santa Teresa 12-0 in five innings as junior Lily Thomas allowed just one hit and juniors Setaita Mau and Brianna Lopiccolo homered.

Live Oak broke open a close game with a six-run sixth inning to defeat Los Altos 11-5.

Previous meetings: None.

Outlook: Live Oak, the BVAL-MH runner-up, has won five of its last six games. Capuchino, which finished fourth in the PAL-Bay with a 7-7 mark, is led by Thomas, who has not only been a standout pitcher (12-12, 3.09 ERA) but leads the team in batting average (.444), hits (32), runs (28) and triples (5).

No. 1 Milpitas vs No. 4 Leigh

Wednesday 4:00 pm

West Valley College

How they got here: Top-seeded Milpitas pulled off a wild 8-7 extra-inning win over Christopher by scoring four runs in the bottom of the ninth after falling behind 7-4. Casandra Curiel went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and Isabella Garcia and Eliana Rodriguez added two hits apiece.

Leigh also won a one-run game, edging Mills 4-3. Junior Reagyn Hider picked up the win with seven solid innings and sophomore Brianna Hooper went 2-for-3 with a double, triple, two runs and two RBIs.

Previous meetings: None.

Outlook: Leigh, which finished tied for third in the BVAL-MH, has been led by Hider, who has a 7-1 record with a 1.55 ERA, and freshman Prestley Mueller, who is hitting .489 with 38 runs scored and a team-leading 45 hits. Milpitas, which finished third in the SCVAL-DA, has been led by junior pitcher Dominique Walker (12-5, 2.53 ERA).
