SLV braves Geiser Field, emerges with victory

September 27, 2014

WATSONVILLE, CA -- San Lorenzo Valley defeated host Watsonville 27-21 on Friday night in a non-league game.

Watsonville took an early lead, scoring touchdowns on its first two possessions. The Cougar offense struggled early. That changed with the second punt by SLV as junior running back Brighton Hart ran 46 yards for a touchdown on the fake boot.

Toward the end of the second quarter, Jared Trader caught a scoring pass from senior quarterback Isaac Newberry, making the score 20-14.

Another Hart TD put the Cougars ahead 27-14, though Watsonville followed with a punt return for a TD, making it 27-21.

SLV’s defense continued to keep Watsonville’s double wing offense out of the end zone.

Offensively, SLV senior running back Nate Gentry rushed for 48 yards and Hart contributed 86.

"Our defense played really well and we started playing really hard," SLV coach Dave Poetzinger said. "So, defensively, we showed up and we said 'We got this' and we fought and we fought and we fought, and to me, that was one of those ones where you go “Trademark Win.” That’s how we’re going to beat people, playing tough D, and opportunistic offense.”

Said Trader: “It’s a grinder, but we stuck in there and we held them and that’s all we needed to do.”
