Bride leads St. Johns past stubborn Window Rock

In action from Arizona in the opening week of the season, St. Johns won a wild one over Window Rock and Page rallied past Tuba City thanks to a ball-hawking defense that was responsible for a pair of long interception-return touchdowns.

Division IV

Sherod Bride rushed for 208 yards and four touchdowns on 24 carries as St. Johns rallied for a 34-30 win over Window Rock. The Redskins trailed 24-14 heading into the fourth quarter before erupting for 20 points in the final period. Wide receiver McKell Bradshaw hit Trevor James on a 47-yard touchdown on a trick play to aid the comeback.

The Fighting Scouts were led by quarterback Latrell Kaye, who hit on 11-of-15 passes for 288 yards and four touchdowns in the losing cause. Delano Walker added 160 yards rushing and a touchdown along with 67 receiving yards and a pair of scores.

Sahuarita handed defending Division IV champions Blue Ridge a 30-8 defeat in the opener. Calvin Jenkins led the way with 128 yards passing and two touchdowns as the Mustangs held the Yellow Jackets scoreless until the final period.

Division V

Page took advantage of three interceptions and rallied past visiting Tuba City, 35-14, Friday night in the season opener for both teams. Kordell Chewing returned two interceptions 70 yards for touchdowns to lead the Sand Devils, who visit Payson Sept. 5. Tuba City, which was led by running back Roland Becenti (11 carries, 55 yards, 1 TD) host Monument Valley Friday night.

Division VI

Nicolaus Cruz threw for 152 yards and three touchdowns – two of them to Michael Salazar – as Superior rolled to a 48-0 victory over Duncan Friday night. Edgar Pacheco chipped in with 10 carries for 63 yards and a pair of scores for the Panthers, who are off until Sept. 5 when they host Fort Thomas.

Duncan, whose lead running back Laramie Wolf was held to just 36 yards on 26 carries, looks to get back on track Friday night at Joseph City.
