Spoto gets past Newsome in thriller; Foundation Academy rolls

Spoto got past Newsome in a thriller to kick off the opening week of action in Florida, while Dixie Hollins was unable to overcome four turnovers in a tough loss to Sarasota.

Division 5A

Kevin Hobley tossed five touchdown passes to lead Spoto to a 40-36 win over Newsome in the season opener for both teams Friday night.

Hobley connected on 17-of-28 passes for 324 yards, latching up with his favorite receiver Terrance Williams nine times for 200 yards and a pair of scores. Sibaron Holmes was also on the receiving end of two touchdown passes, finishing with 66 yards on five grabs.

In other games involving Division 5A teams, Rickards got 159 yards rushing and two touchdowns from Deion Hogan in a 31-7 win over Creekside … despite 215 yards passing on 16-of-28 attempts from quarterback Ryan Davis, Lakewood fell short against Mosley, 20-14, in its season opener … Jacob Murphy had just four completions, but three went for touchdowns as Foundation Academy routed Lake Highland 47-0 Friday night … Deondre Francois completed 15-of-19 passes for 185 yards and a score as IMG Academy defeated Godby, 32-13 … Ethan Weilant hauled in three passes for 102 yards and two touchdowns as Land O’Lakes edged Zephyrhills, 28-24.

Division 6A

Despite a big night from quarterback Tyrie Adams (17-of-24, 293 yards), Dixie Hollins came up short in its season opener Friday night, losing 33-21 to Sarasota. Four turnovers did in the Rebels, including a key fumble on the kickoff directly after the Sailors took a 27-21 lead in the fourth quarter. Sarasota scored on the very next play to extend the lead to 12 points.

Davontae Harrington caught eight passes for 168 yards and a touchdown in the loss.

In other games … Sean Reddick completed 14-of-20 passes for 136 yards and two touchdowns as Homestead defeated Ferguson, 21-7 …Gulf Coast hammered Coral Park, 62-0, as quarterback Jordan Falls completed 8-of-11 for 95 yards and two touchdowns.

Division 7A

Camden County raced out to an early 21-0 lead and cruised to a 49-27 win over Lincoln Saturday night. Ryan Johnson scored on a pair of short touchdown runs and Brandon McMaster contributed 89 yards rushing and a touchdown for Camden County.

Chris Brimm led the Trojans with 303 passing yards and three touchdowns in a losing cause.

In other games … Tristan Tucker rushed for 65 yards and two touchdowns to lead Hagerty to a 38-31 win over East River.

Division 8A

Chatarius Atwell completed 13-of-23 passes for 223 yards and a touchdown to lead Northwestern to an 18-12 win over Palm Beach Central. Marcus Williams accumulated 165 yards receiving and a touchdown for the winners. Kemar Downer paced Palm Beach Central with two touchdown receptions.

An efficient Kyle Winkler completed 10-of-11 passes for 72 yards and a score as Chatfield got past Everglades, 27-14 Thursday night.
