Alex Cavender hit wide receiver Devon Cannon for a 30-yard touchdown pass with less than two minutes remaining to lift Space Coast to a 20-13 win over host Satellite Friday night in the 2014 Kickoff Classic at Scorpion Stadium.

“Obviously big kids make big plays and Devon came through with that touchdown at the end,” Space Coast coach Jake Owens told Florida Today. “We’re a good football team and we just beat a good football team and good teams win the close ones.”

Cavender finished with 155 yards passing and three touchdowns, two to Cannon (6 receptions, 81 yards) and another to Jason Browning (4 receptions, 56 yards). Cavender also led the Vipers with 67 yards rushing.

The game marked the coaching debut of Scorpions coach Mark Carstens, whose team opened the scoring on a 26-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Alex Nicks to Alexander Cabrera.

Antonio Callaway was on the receiving end of three of Alexander’s touchdown passes, finishing with 12 catches for 265 yards.

"Our kids stayed composed even early when it looked like we were rattled," Washington coach Tim Harris told Hamptonroads.com. "But they stepped up and got settled down."
