NorCal programs partner together to fight cancer

September 26, 2016

This fall, MaxPreps partnered with Pledge It and St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital to create Touchdowns Against Cancer 2016.

In Northern California, 26 high school football programs have raised money for this cause, while 16 other programs have activated this feature on their MaxPreps pages, but have yet to receive any donations. For these programs, it is not too late. The program runs through this Friday’s games.

Schools in the Bay Area have raised close to $1,400 going into the final week, led by Live Oak-Morgan Hill and Pittsburg. The decision to join this fundraiser and promote it in the community was a no-brainer for Pittsburg coach Vic Galli, who had it brought to his attention by long-time assistant Alan Jobb.

“(Alan) brought this to me, and we knew it was the right thing to do, especially with (former defensive coordinator) Jim Shipe fighting it right now,” Galli said. “One parent, who had lost a son to cancer, thanked us for doing this, for bringing awareness to our community, and each of us shed some tears with her story.”

Other programs in the Bay Area who have raised funds over the last two weekends include Sobrato-Morgan Hill, Antioch, and De La Salle.

Sacramento-area schools, meanwhile, have raised over $12,000 going into the final week, led by Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills, which has raised over $5,600 on its own. Oakmont-Roseville has also raised nearly $2,000 in the two weeks of the program, while schools such as Del Oro-Loomis, Millennium-Tracy, and Woodland Christian have passed the halfway mark getting to $1,000.
