SF International, St. Ignatius, Mission San Jose teams win state academic awards

San Francisco International sports teams excelled academically in 2014-2015 with its girls’ cross country, girls’ wrestling and girls’ track and field squads all managing the top grade point averages in the state.

Those teams have been honored as top academic squads in the state and will receive a banner suitable for display in a gym.

The Southern Section led the way with 14 teams honored, followed by four teams for the Central Coast Section and San Francisco sections, three for the North Coast Section and San Diego Section and one for the Central Section and North Section.

Mission San Jose had two teams named tops in academics in the state (boys’ soccer and boys’ water polo) and St. Ignatius (boys’ and girls’ lacrosse).

International’s girls’ cross-country and girls’ track and field teams both managed 4.0 grade point averages. Its wrestling team came close to a 4.0, with a 3.97.

SI girls’ lacrosse was tops in the state with a 3.89 GPA and its boys’ lacrosse managed a 3.60.

Mission San Jose had the best GPA in the state among boys’ soccer teams (3.85) and boys’ water polo (3.80).

Other area schools who were tops in the state were Castilleja girls’ soccer (3.92), Washington-San Francisco girls’ lacrosse (3.89), Cardinal Newman swimming and diving (3.79) and Mountain View gymnastics (3.61).

Not all of the winners were in mainstream sports. Enterprise-Redding had the top GPA among girls’ skiing teams with a 3.52.
