Northern California Boys Basketball Rankings

February 4, 2015

Six teams move up two spots with Archbishop Mitty-Jose making a huge move up

Boys Rankings

(Includes results for games through February 3)

1. (1) Bishop O’Dowd-Oakland 15-3

The towns of Hayward, Alameda and San Leandro fell victim to the Dragons last week with Tennyson and Mt. Eden of Hayward on tap this week in what has been an easy ride through the West Alameda County – Foothill League. That will change Saturday when O’Dowd travel to the Nike Extravaganza at Mater Dei-Santa Ana to face a national No. 3 Oak Hill Academy of Virginia team they lost to 58-49 just before Christmas. In the last game against Oak Hill O'Dowd led by as many as eight points before falling after being outscored 34-21 after halftime. Ivan Rabb had 27 points, but he also had three first half fouls. For the Dragons to avenge the loss they’ll need to keep Rabb on the floor.

2. (2) Moreau Catholic-Hayward 15-5

The Mariners got by American-Fremont 68-58 and then took out Newark Memorial-Newark 73-54 in Mission Valley League action on the road last week. They’re now 8-0 in league with a road game at Irvington-Fremont and Mission San Jose-Fremont at home this week. Head coach Frank Knight and his boys will be hard to handle in the CIF North Coast Section playoffs.

3. (3) Campolindo-Moraga 18-2

Camp breezed last week in Diablo Foothill League action with wins over Dublin (78-59), Acalanes-Lafayette (64-49) and 67-51 against Miramonte-Orinda. Another of the members of a stacked NCS Division III also got a 108-73 win on Tuesday over Alhambra-Martinez. Next up is Las Lomas-Walnut Creek.

4. (6) Monte Vista-Danville

The Mustangs move up two spots here just like in the Cal-Hi Sports rankings where they got a bump from No. 19 to No. 17 after 47-40 win over cross-town San Ramon Valley and a 69-48 thrashing of Granada-Livermore. Foothill-Pleasanton and California-San Ramon make up this week’s slate.

5. (7) Folsom 20-3

The top team from the CIF Sac-Joaquin Section also gets a two spot bump here and in the Cal-Hi Sports state rankings where after breaking in at No. 20 two weeks ago the Bulldogs snatch the No. 18 spot with a 55-40 victory at Oak Ridge-El Dorado Hills and a 62-48 victory over visiting Granite Bay. Bulldogs have won seven-straight since a 66-64 loss to Monte Vista team they stay behind.

6. (8) Sacramento 18-4

After having no problems with Florin-Sacramento the Dragons move into the Cal-Hi sports Top 20 at No. 19, as the only in state teams they have lost to are ranked above them in the state rankings, Bishop O'Dowd, Sierra Canyon-Chatsworth and Campolindo.

7. (9) De La Salle-Concord 19-2

The Spartans move back into the Cal-Hi Sports rankings and snag the No. 20 and final spot. Head coach Frank Allocco and his boys have only lost to state-ranked Bishop Montgomery-Torrance and Monte Vista in close games, and actually were in an excellent position to win the game versus the latter before blowing a late lead. “At the time I saw the game versus Bishop Montgomery, I felt De La Salle had the makings of the second best team in NorCal, and considering what Bishop Montgomery has done to some good teams in recent weeks it not a far-fetched notion,” Grassrootshoops editor Ronnie Flores said. The record shown includes a 70-55 win at Granada-Livermore on Tuesday.

8. (10) El Cerrito 21-3

Including a Tuesday 70-61 win at St. Mary’s-Berkeley the Gauchos are now 9-0 and in firm control of the Tri-County – Rock League and gearing up for the playoffs after the upset loss to Sheldon two weeks ago. Next up is a Friday night match-up with Salesian the Prep2Prep caravan will try to attend.

9. (11) Modesto Christian-Modesto 17-3

Crusaders have a solid resume with lone losses are to Moreau, Campolindo and 63-61 to the El Cerrito team they fall in behind. Metro Modesto Conference play continues this week with cross-town foes Gregori and Enochs, and then an interesting match-up with No. 19 Capital Christian in Sacramento on Saturday.

10. (21) Archbishop Mitty-San Jose 11-7

The top-ranked team in the wild-and-wacky WCAL, but not the first place team, gets back the 11 spots they lost last week to where they were two weeks ago in the No. 10 slot. The reason is the Monarchs took down Saint Francis a second time to hand that team its only two defeats. They also blew out St. Ignatius-San Francisco by 40 points last week.

11. (5) Saint Francis-Mountain View 16-2

The Lancers lost by double-digits to Mitty for second time but came through to beat Serra, 59-54 at home, in what was a must win to stay in first place in the West Catholic Athletic League.

12. (4) Drake-San Anselmo 20-3

Record includes a Tuesday 70-55 win at Tamalpais, but that of little solace to a Pirates team that lost a 52-51 heartbreaker to Marin Catholic-Kentfield to end a 19-game winning streak. Drake has to drop pretty far although Marin Catholic had a huge 61-60 win over Cal-Hi Sports No. Bishop Montgomery for that team’s only loss.

13. (13) Half Moon Bay 21-0

The Cougars best win is over St. Patrick St. Vincent-Vallejo and its diminished a bit with that team’s recent tanking. Still, head coach Rich Forslund and his boys have won all their games and have the best record in the state.

14. (17) Sheldon-Sacramento 13-5

The record includes a close 53-48 win on Monday over Franklin-Elk Grove. The Huskies Snagged the last spot three weeks ago and have moved up eight spots and now three spots in the last two weeks respectively.

15T. (12) Serra-San Mateo

Padres couldn’t get by Saint Francis so now Lancers still hold top spot with Padres at 6-2 and in second place. Because of that Serra gets to stay in the top 15 but must share final spot.

15T. (14) Woodcreek-Roseville 18-4

Lone game last week was a 68-55 win over visiting Rocklin. Through no fault of their own the Timberwolves drop a spot and into a tie with Serra to make room for Sheldon and Mitty.
