Salina-South rolls again; Ellis edges TMP-Marian

Each week, Prep2Prep recaps some of the top action from games involving Kansas high school football teams.

Class 6A

Salina-South 57, Haysville Campus 14: Senior Dalton Wassenberg tossed four touchdown passes – two each to juniors Dylan Becker and Jacob Marcotte as the Cougars routed the visiting Colts.

Wassenberg completed 7-of-15 passes for 231 yards. Becker caught four passes for 137 yards and Marcotte added two catches for 82 yards.

Class 5A

Wichita Northwest 48, Kapaun Mt. Carmel 31: Senior KeShaun McGaugh carried 30 times for 299 yards and four touchdowns to lift the Grizzlies to a home win over the Crusaders.

“I don’t think there is anyone that can top us when we’re all together,” McGaugh told KAKE. “When we play like a team and play for each other, we’re unstoppable.”

Junior Alex Bott caught a touchdown pass from Kevin Folsom, who completed 4-of-8 passes for 81 yards and added 133 rushing yards and a score.

Wichita Northwest improved to 1-1, while Kapaun Mt. Carmel dropped to 1-1. The Crusaders travel to Wichita North next Friday night while the Crusaders host Carroll.

In other action … junior Demarco King caught two balls for 69 yards, including a TD pass from Dylan Scheer to lead Valley Center to a 13-12 win over visiting Arkansas City.

Class 4A

Scott 59, Colby 19: Senior Trey O’Neil completed 14-of-17 passes for 200 yards and four touchdowns to lead the Beavers to a blowout win over the visiting Eagles.

Senior Sloan Baker caught two passes – both for touchdowns – and junior Wyatt Kropp (13 carries, 87 yards) and senior Chantz Yager (10, 78) each rushed for scores for Scott (2-0), which travels to Goodland Friday night. Colby (0-2) looks for its first win at home against Hugoton.

St. James Academy 36, Wyandotte 14: Junior Trey Keith hit on 8-of-10 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Thunder over the Bulldogs.

St. James Academy (2-0) travels to DeSoto Friday night; Wyandotte (0-2) hosts Schlagle.

In other action … sophomore Raef Hilt rushed for 116 yards and two touchdowns to lead Augusta to a 39-0 win over host El Dorado … senior Drake Hake carried 29 times for 178 yards and two touchdowns as Concordia rolled to a 30-0 win at St. Mary’s.

Class 3A

Arma-Northeast 36, Maranatha Christian 6: The host Vikings had no trouble with the Eagles as junior Drew Mills rushed for 247 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries.

Antonio Slingluff added 114 yards rushing and a touchdown for Arma-Northeast (1-1), which hosts Anderson County Friday night. The Eagles (0-2) travel to Christ Prep Academy in search of their first win.

Oswego 36, Erie 34: The host Indians raced out to an early lead and held on to defeat the Red Devils behind the play of junior Ethan Carter (15 carries, 84 yards, 3 TDs).

Junior quarterback Johnathan Walker threw for just 59 yards but rushed for 102 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for Oswego, which improved to 2-0. Erie dropped to 0-2.

This Friday, Oswego travels to Jayhawk Linn while Erie hosts Neodesha.

In other action …senior Thatcher Horak rushed for 112 yards and two touchdowns and caught three passes for 51 yards and two scores to lead Rossville to a 56-8 win at Wabaunsee … junior Armando Gomez rushed for 115 yards and four touchdowns to lead host West Elk to a 54-6 win over Bishop Seabury … senior Grant Raleigh threw for 149 yards and four touchdowns and rushed for 157 yards as Hesston hammered visiting Halstead, 42-14.

Class 2-1A

Oskaloosa 36, Jefferson County North 28: Senior Luis Rodriguez rushed for 184 yards and three touchdowns to help the Bears get past the Chargers.

Justin Sharp added 174 yards rushing and caught a TD pass for Oskaloosa (2-0), which travels to Immaculata Friday night. Jefferson County North (0-2) travels to Pleasant Ridge.

Ellis 26, TMP-Marian 21: The host Railroaders built a 26-7 lead and withstood a fourth-quarter rally to defeat the Monarchs.

Sophomore Easton Smith completed 13-of-19 passes for 171 yards and two touchdowns for Ellis.

“We knew it was going to be a good game, come down to the last play,” Ellis coach Butch Hayes told the Hays Daily News. “That’s how we prepared all week. We’re glad we were able to get a win here tonight.”

After the Monarchs pulled to within 26-21 with two fourth-quarter touchdowns, the Railroaders clinched the game on an interception by sophomore Bryce Keithley at the Ellis 29-yard line in the game’s final moments.

“Had one seem like it got away from us tonight,” TMP coach John Montgomery said.

Senior Max Megaffin led TMP with 244 yards and a touchdown on 18-of-27 passing and also rushed for 60 yards and two touchdowns.

In other action … Washington County rolled over visiting Onaga, 40-7, behind the play of junior QB Konner Penning, who completed 13-of-19 passes for 276 yards and four touchdowns … senior Wyatt VanDorn rushed for 145 yards and three touchdowns and threw a TD pass as Centralia/Wetmore routed host Troy, 50-14 … Sabastian Morales rushed for 144 yards and three scores to lead Sublette to a 30-0 road win over Wichita County.
