Corona del Mar wins 29th straight; Poly remains unbeaten

Each week, Prep2Prep takes a look at some of the key matchups involving Southern Section high school football teams.

Corona del Mar 31, El Toro 14: Junior quarterback Peter Bush rushed for three touchdowns as the Sea Kings won their 29th consecutive game.

“They aren’t happy or satisfied with what they did last year,” said Corona del Mar coach Scott Meyer, referring to his team’s CIF State Division III title in 2013 to the Daily Pilot.

Bush completed 13-of-23 passes for 136 yards and rushed for 101 yards on 23 carries. Wide receiver Bo St. Geme caught nine passes for 155 yards and a 50-yard touchdown that gave the Sea Kings a 17-7 lead just before the halftime break.

Senior Trey Tinsley completed 20-of-39 passes for 184 yards to lead El Toro.

Long Beach Poly 35, Westlake 24: Senior Josh Love completed 27-of-43 passes for 347 yards and four touchdowns and the Jackrabbits improved to 3-0 with a win over the host Warriors.

Dae’John Jeffrey Logan caught nine passes for 128 yards and two touchdowns for Poly and fellow senior Johnnie Rucker also caught a pair of TD passes. It was the first loss for Westlake (2-1).

San Clemente 49, Dana Hills 21: Senior USC commit Sam Darnold completed 16-of-25 passes for 321 yards and four touchdowns as the Tritons rolled to a victory over the winless Dolphins.

Darnold accounted for six touchdowns in all, as he rushed for 29 yards and a pair of scores. He effectively spread the ball around, with senior Cole Harlow accounting for two touchdowns and 56 yards receiving.

San Clemente (2-1) took advantage of its depth to break open a close game at halftime. The Tritons led just 21-7 at the half.

“They had a lot of guys going both ways,” San Clemente coach Jamie Ortiz told the San Clemente Times. “I told the kids at halftime the third quarter was going to be the difference between winning and losing and that’s what happened.”

San Clemente scored the first 21 points of the third quarter to extend the lead to 42-7. Dana Hills was led by senior quarterback Cole Wilber, who completed 22-of-43 passes for 263 yards and two touchdowns.

Saugus 63, Buena-Ventura 35: The Centurions piled up nearly 700 yards of total offense in posting their first win of the season.

Senior quarterback Chris Hamilton threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns, completing 21-of-27 passes. He also rushed for 70 yards and a score on 14 carries. Senior wide receiver Marc Langford caught a whopping 17 passes for 310 yards and two touchdowns.

Junior Martin Mijares led Buena with 254 yards on 28-of-36 passing and two touchdowns. Josh Cookson added 94 yards rushing and three touchdowns.

Fullerton 34, El Dorado 13: Senior Andrew Tavarez threw for 261 yards and hit three different receivers for scores as the Indians improved to 2-1. El Dorado fell to 0-2.

Tavarez completed 16-of-19 passes for 261 yards. Seniors Kaene Soto (5 receptions, 122 yards), David Wagner (4, 74) and junior Benny Pichardo (3, 25) each caught touchdown passes for Fullerton.

In other action … San Luis Obispo defeated Oxnard, 29-26, despite 227 yards rushing and four touchdowns by junior Raymond Caldera … sophomore Niko Harris completed 15-of-25 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns to lead Sierra Canyon to a 38-19 road win over Taft … senior Caleb Devine rushed for 198 yards and two touchdowns as Maranatha edged visiting Azusa, 35-26 … La Quinta hammered JW North, 63-0, as senior Chris Rom-Toribio rushed 19 times for 211 yards and five touchdowns.
