St. Mary's Colgan wins 18th state baseball title

June 3, 2014

St. Mary’s-Colgan won its ninth Kansas baseball state championship in the last 11 years and 18th overall after beating Little River 4-0 Friday evening.

This was also head coach Mike Watt’s 14th state championship at St. Mary’s-Colgan. Senior pitcher Drew Dawson earned a complete-game shutout allowing just six Little River hits and ending the game by striking out the final Little River batter after a Colgan error extended the inning.

This was Dawson’s second consecutive complete-game shutout as he started last year’s state championship game against Silver Lake, winning 10-0.

Designated hitter Aaron Twarog had an RBI in the top of the first inning to give Colgan and Dawson an early lead. Ryan and Christian Cedeno helped extend the lead with big hits contributing to two runs in the sixth and another in the seventh making the score 4-0 and putting the game out of reach.

Little River came up just short, but still had a great season finishing with a record of 20-6 and a second-place finish in class 2-1A.
