St. Francis remains atop Bay Area prep rankings

April 8, 2014

It’s another difficult week to do rankings as Mitty beat St. Francis, 2-1, but also dropped its third game of the season with a defeat to Valley Christian.

We kept St. Francis in the top spot because its non-conference resume is better than the Monarchs, who have a slight edge in West Catholic league games played.

These are based on games played through April 5.

Previous week’s rankings are in parentheses.

1. (1) St. Francis 10-2

The Lancers have a chance to avenge its first loss this week when it hosts St. Ignatius on Tuesday. It appears that Tyler Deason will get the start in that game after allowing four unearned runs in the 5-2 loss to SI last month.

2. (2) Archbishop Mitty 11-3

Junior Kris Bubic went six innings and struck out five in the 2-1 win over St. Francis. Bubic has struck out 46 in 32.2 innings with a 0.86 earned run average and, offensively, has hits in nine of his last 10 games.

3. (3) California 10-1

4. (4) De La Salle 8-2

De La Salle exacted some revenge with a 4-3 win over Amador Valley, the team that beat the Spartans three times last season, including the NCS championship. Cameron Schneider, a 6-foot-6 junior, has now picked up two league wins in relief.

The Spartans have a challenging week with Monte Vista, San Ramon Valley, and Granada on the schedule.

5. (5) Valley Christian-San Jose 9-4

Theron Kay pitched a no-hitter in a 5-0 win over Mitty and the Warriors now have six shutouts this season, three by Kay.

On Tuesday, Kay will pitch against Bellarmine for the fifth time over the last three seasons.

6. (8) Bellarmine 11-3

The Bells followed a three-game losing streak with three straight wins but play Valley Christian and Mitty this week.

7. (9) Campolindo 10-3

The Cougars went 3-1 at the tough Desert Classic in Las Vegas.

8. (6) St. Ignatius 9-6

9. (12) San Ramon Valley 7-3

Greg Lowe and Nick Poirier combined for five hits and seven runs batted in a 9-5 win over Foothill.

10. (10) Foothill 8-2

Foothill, whose only loss is to De La Salle, is up this high thanks to its win over Cal but the Falcons have a lot more work to do to hold on to this spot.

Kyle Franco pitched a six-hitter against Cal.

11. (13) San Benito 12-2

The Haybalers have won eight straight and allowed one run or less in seven of those games.

Seniors Hunter Haworth and Greg Steinbeck have combined to allow just five runs, 34 hits, and 11 walks over 60.2 innings, while striking out 63.

12. (11) Serra 9-7

13. (15) Amador Valley 8-3

14. (14) Granada 8-3

15. (18) Clayton Valley 11-0

It’s been a soft schedule but senior Gabe Taylor, a quarterback during the fall, is 4-0 with a 1.91 earned run average and he has a .484 average and eight stolen bases.

16. (19) College Park 7-2

17. (20) Monte Vista 6-3

Senior Jonathan Freshman pitched his first complete game of the year in a 4-3 decision over Lodi. Freshman now has 28 strikeouts in 23.1 innings.

18. (NR) Leigh 8-4-1

Leigh owns two wins over Los Gatos, who beat Wilcox twice last week.

19. (NR) Los Gatos 15-3

Senior ace Cameron Ackerman is striking out a batter per inning and is 5-0 with a 1.61 earned run average. Ackerman is also hitting .392 with 20 hits.

20. (7) Wilcox 12-4

21. (17) Acalanes 9-4

22. (16) Palo Alto 7-7

23. (NR) Westmont 11-3

Junior Mike Morbo had eight hits in nine at bats last week.

24. (24) Willow Glen 12-3

T-25. (T-25) Maria Carrillo 10-2, Casa Grande 8-3, Petaluma 10-3-1
