Report: Wolves replace Kessler as coach before game

November 16, 2013

San Ramon Valley removed Mark Kessler as football coach for undisclosed reasons Friday, according to a story in the Contra Costa Times. He was replaced by Wolves assistant coach Aaron Becker for Saturday night's game against San Leandro.

San Ramon players learned about the move before Friday's practice, the Times reported.

Kessler was unavailable for comment.

As the coach of the Wolves, Kessler compiled a 35-25 overall record in five seasons, including being co-champions of the East Bay Athletic League with California.

This season, the Wolves finished with a 6-4 overall record (5-1 in EBAL), good enough for second place in the standings.

The 2011 season was Kessler’s finest season as the coach, as the Wolves advanced to the NCS championship game, before falling to De La Salle 49-13 at the Oakland Coliseum. That Wolves squad featured current Cal quarterback Zach Kline, who was also named the California Gatorade Player of the Year in 2011.

Quarterbacks were a big part of coach Kessler’s success, with Kline the QB until 2011, and Cameron Birse as the signal-caller in 2012. Birse is now playing at Arkansas State.

Saturday night the No. 6 seed Wolves traveled to No. 11 San Leandro for the first round of the NCS Division 1 Playoffs. This will be the first time the Wolves won’t be coached by Kessler since 2008, when they were led by Dave Kravitz.
