Mt. Pleasant has forfeited its victory in the CCS Division II boys soccer championship game, meaning that Sacred Heart Cathedral is now the section champion for that division.
Mt. Pleasant originally captured the title on Saturday, 1-0, by virtue of a goal in the 44th minute. After the game, however, Mt. Pleasant school and district administrators in attendance discovered that the Cardinals had used an ineligible player in the contest. According to Sacred Heart Cathedral coach Jeff Wilson, East Side Union High School District superintendent Chris Funk self-reported the violation to the Central Coast Section office, which vacated the victory for Mt. Pleasant.
"I got a call from the CCS yesterday that (Mt. Pleasant) had used an ineligible player in the title," Wilson commented. "It's been a weird season for us, with so many injuries, so we will take it. We finish as CCS champs."
Because the forfeit came after the seeding was complete for the CIF NorCal championships, SHC will not replace Mt. Pleasant in the CIF NorCal Division III bracket. Instead, seven seed University will advance to the semifinals by virtue of a forfeit victory over Mt. Pleasant, who was slotted as the two seed in the bracket.
