Serra announced on Tuesday in a press release that 1992 graduate Chris Houle would take over as its varsity baseball coach for the upcoming 2018 season.
Houle, who is an on-campus teacher for the Padres, previously served as the program's junior varsity coach from 1998-2009, and was also the school's assistant director of athletics from 2003-2004. He teaches business, technology, and math.
As an athlete at Serra, Houle won back-to-back WCAL baseball titles, along with a CCS and CIF in his junior year, 1991.
"I truly love Serra baseball, and love being part of such a rich tradition," Houle said. "As a child, I grew up watching Padre baseball. I played all four years in high school and later coached at Serra for 12 years, so I have a unique perspective."
Houle also has a family connection to the head spot in the program. His grandfather, Ken Houle, guided the program from 1956-1975.
"We are extremely excited to have Chris Houle as our new varsity baseball coach," said Serra Director of Athletics Dean Ayoob, in the school's press release. "Chris knows our school and program very well, and he is passionate about promoting the values that Serra stands for."
Houle takes over a program which reached the championship game of the CCS Open Division last season, despite a coaching change near the end of the regular season.
