SAN JOSE - After a scoreless first half, the Leigh boys soccer team broke through for a pair of goals in the final 12 minutes of the match to defeat host Oak Grove 2-0 in a non-league match Tuesday afternoon. The Longhorns improved to 2-0-2; the Eagles dropped to 1-3.
Just two minutes after Oak Grove missed on its best opportunity of the afternoon, Leigh broke the deadlock. Dominic Sorich took a short throw-in along the right side, juggled the ball past a defender and crossed the ball into the middle for a wide-open Perp Batinic, who easily slotted the ball into the net in the 69th minute to give the Longhorns a 1-0 lead.
Leigh added to its lead in the 73rd minute. Center back Justin Fathali pounded a free kick into the penalty area from near the halfway line and the ball bounced to Adam Khamici along the left side of the box. Khamici calmly swung the ball in off the far post to make it 2-0.
Sorich, who had a very strong game up front, had Leigh's two best opportunities in the first half. Oak Grove nearly scored on what would have been an own goal, but sophomore goalkeeper Jeron Goldstein got a fingertip on the ball to deflect it off the right post.
The Longhorns look to remain unbeaten Thursday when they travel to Los Gatos. The Eagles' next match is Monday night (7 pm) when they host St. Ignatius.
