SAN JOSE - In a rematch of last years CCS Open Division semifinal matchup, Archbishop Mitty needed a late goal from senior captain Teresa Garcia to rescue a 2-2 tie and keep the Monarchs undefeated.
Despite having a rough start to their season, for Leland's (1-4-3, 0-0) standards, the defending BVAL champions found themselves on the scoreboard first after Leena Tantaway scored a rebound off a Rebecca Wormer free kick. Indeed it was Wormer who looked dangerous for the Chargers all night in what was a premier matchup between her and Mitty center back Alexa Arancio. After the goal, Mitty's high press created numerous chances early on, but Leland keeper Sofia Scola did a great job stifling the Monarchs, especially coming off her line early and often. The Monarchs did find the breakthrough midway through the first half, when junior standout Emma Vane found Annalise Gadbois in front of Scola's net where she calmly slotted her chance.
It looked as if the Monarchs (5-0-3, 0-0) would take over from that point on but only five minutes into the second half Leland found itself on the front foot again after a terrific individual effort by Wormer found Tantaway for her second of the night. Despite a clear majority of possession it seemed like Leland's stifling defense would send the Monarchs to their first loss of the season; then magic happened. Garcia scored a wonder goal off a rocket shot from another brilliant pass by Vane.
While Mitty will be disappointed to not get the victory, the Monarchs are happy to remain undefeated after a brutally tough non-league schedule. The Monarchs will open WCAL play on the road Wednesday at Valley Christian.
