Wilcox remained unbeaten at its second home - Levi's Stadium - and opened Santa Clara Valley Athletic League-De Anza play with a 49-11 win over Los Altos Saturday afternoon as part of the fourth annual High School Football Series presented by Foster Farms.
The Chargers led 14-3 after one quarter, but a Los Altos touchdown and two-point interception closed the gap to three points at 14-11 in the second quarter. Wilcox extended the lead to 21-11 at the half, before pulling away over the final two quarters of play.
"I thought we reacted well to them closing the gap against us," said Wilcox coach Paul Rosa. "We were able to score right before the half, and then played on a different level in the second half."
In the nightcap, Mater Dei-Santa Ana, ranked by some services as the No. 1 team in the nation, hammered St. Mary's-Stockton, 52-14.
Wilcox had previously participated in the event, handily defeating Santa Clara in 2014 and Pioneer in 2015.
Senior quarterback David Hernandez ran for 132 yards and three touchdowns on just 11 carries in the win over Los Altos and sophomore running back Paul Rosa added 100 yards on the ground. In total, the Chargers put up 439 yards rushing to wear down the Eagles.
