Campolindo hands Las Lomas first DAL loss

February 2, 2017

MORAGA, CA - The Campolindo boys basketball team upset a favored and undefeated Las Lomas team in DAL-Foothill play on Tuesday night, 62-59, forging a tie for the division lead at the same time.

Coming into the game, Las Lomas was the DAL-Foothill favorite with a 4-0 record in league.

“Going into the game, Las Lomas was the most talented team in our league,” Campolindo head coach Steven Dyer said. “But we had a lot of guys step up and play well today and we managed to beat them. I’m pretty proud of my players for doing that.”

Junior Will Cummins was the Cougars’ top scorer with 21 points.

“We were losing in the first quarter, but that didn’t get us down. We knew [Las Lomas] was a pretty good team” Cummins said. “We held strong and pushed through. Luckily we never gave up, we passed well, we shot well, and we managed to win.”

Las Lomas had a brief lead in the start of the second quarter, but Cummins and freshman Hunter Clarke hit four three-pointers, to make the score 25-19 with five minutes left in the first half. The Knights responded with two three-pointers from junior guard Jason Holman to cut the score to 34-32 in favor of Campolindo at the half.

The Knights managed to keep the game close throughout the second half. Junior forward guard Devin Payne made three layups and senior guard Tanner Wallace scored a three-pointer. The Cougars would counter with three layups from senior Lev Garcia and a three-pointer from Cummins.

In the final 15 seconds, Las Lomas attempted a flurry of three-point attempts from Holman, senior Anthony Haskett, and Payne, trying to send the game into overtime.

“If the Knights had made the three-pointer, it would have been tied. It was extremely intense to watch.” Dyer said.

Las Lomas was paced by Payne with 25 points and junior Robert Prince with 10 points.

Campolindo (14-7, 4-1) will travel to Miramonte to face the Matadors on Friday, while Las Lomas (16-5, 4-1) hosts Acalanes on Friday night.
