Efficient Los Gatos blanks Wilcox

April 23, 2015

LOS GATOS, CA -- Playing with the speed and efficiency of a team that had a prior engagement scheduled for 6 p.m., the Los Gatos baseball team defeated Wilcox 3-0 Wednesday.

The crisply played game took just 75 minutes, or about 10 minutes per inning.

Los Gatos ace Hunter Bigge helped move the game along, pitching a two-hitter, striking out four and walking one.

"We've had a lot of games this year that have been pretty short, but I think this might have been one of the shortest," Bigge said. "I always want to get ahead on the count and once I do that I want to work as quickly as possible from there."

The victory -- the Wildcats' 15th consecutive -- gives Los Gatos (20-1, 10-1) a one-game lead over Wilcox (16-8, 9-2) in the SCVAL-De Anza race. The teams meet again at 4 p.m. Friday at Wilcox.

Harry Hibberd's three-run double off the left-field fence with the bases loaded and two out in the second inning was all it took for the Wildcats.

"I was just looking for a good pitch to hit, something that I could drive, and get a couple of runs in," Hibberd said. "I didn't think it was going to be out, but I knew I struck it well and I knew it was going to be over his head."

Wilcox had a chance to get the third runner at the plate on the play, but the relay went to second base instead of home.

Jake Holton had led off the inning for Los Gatos with a single and then perfect bunt singles by Doug Neubauer and Ryan Gault loaded the bases. Wilcox pitcher Nick Green struck out the next two batters, but then Hibbert came up with his clutch hit.

Offensively Wilcox fans had little to cheer about as the Chargers didn't get a runner past second base. Bigge didn't even allow a baserunner until Jacob Martinez's bloop single to right field with two out in the fourth inning.

Green was also impressive for Wilcox, allowing just seven hits in a complete-game effort, while striking out seven and walking none.

Wilcox coach Dave Currie was impressed by Bigge and his economical performance.

"That was quick," Currie said of the game. "He gets the ball quick and has good tempo. He works fast and the catcher gets the ball back to him quick. I like their intensity; I think they all kind of feed off of that."

Added Currie: "We just made one bad pitch. I thought (Green) threw well. I thought he was right there with them. But they executed good. They had two good bunts and then our guy gets two strikeouts and then just made a bad pitch."

Holton, Neubauer and Gault all had two hits for Los Gatos. Martinez and Jacob Adame each had a hit for Wilcox.

The teams meet again at 4 p.m. Friday at Wilcox.
