Beasley leads Dougherty Valley past Pittsburg

December 11, 2019

SAN RAMON, Calif. - It’s been just four games into Robby Beasley’s senior year at Dougherty Valley after spending the first three at Dublin, but he already feels right at home. That much was evident on Tuesday night when he torched the Pittsburg for 40 points as the Wildcats topped the Pirates, 76-57.

“He had 40, but it was unselfish,” Dougherty Valley coach Mike Hansen said. “He found open guys, he defended. That’s a complete game, an MVP-type kid. He could have had 60.”

Beasley had support from the Sevilla brothers, Donovan and Aidan, who chipped in 15 and 11, respectively. But from the get-go the night belonged to the former Gael standout; he hit six of seven attempts in the first quarter. By the end of the game, playing all but a couple of minutes didn’t cheapen his accomplishment, as he finished 15-of-24 from the field (including 4-of-6 from deep) and six-of-seven from the line, all while receiving an increasingly amount of attention from the defense.

“(My teammates) match my style,” Beasley stated. “I work hard, they work hard with me. I was just throwing it up there and it was going in.”

Still, Pittsburg (1-6) – which got 13 points from Bryce Pagurigan and 12 from Jalen Robertson – trailed just 37-32 to start the second half. Dougherty Valley (4-0) began the quarter on a 13-3 run and behind Beasley and the Sevilla's kept the pressure on; when reserve Will Bried nailed a three-pointer to make it 64-41, the rest was mostly elementary.

Beasley, who has verbally committed to the University of Montana, raised his scoring average to 27.5 points per game. He also had four rebounds, four steals, and two assists, and very nearly had 44 points or more as two achingly-close, in-traffic layups rolled off the rim.

Aidan Sevilla also had six rebounds and four assists for the Wildcats.

“They’re dogs,” Beasley said of the Sevilla's. “Even when it’s not going on offense, they’ll be on the defensive end and get it back.”

While at Dublin, Beasley’s teams won 80 of 97 games, reached three EBAL Championships (winning one), and got at least as far as the NCS Division I semifinals in 2017, 2018, and 2019. He entered this campaign averaging 17 points for his career and joined a Wildcats team that stopped just short of 20 wins for two years running. He moved to San Ramon and started school at Dougherty Valley near the end of last year.

“We can get as good as these guys wanna get,” Hansen added. “There’s enough pieces here to make a deep run. We always focus on EBAL first. We got to stay together, we got to stay healthy, we’ll be fine.”
