Central Catholic cruises past David Douglas

October 21, 2017

PORTLAND -- Central Catholic scored touchdowns on three of its first four drives and cruised to a 56-8 win over visiting David Douglas Friday night.

Senior Joe Henderson got the start at quarterback for the Rams (6-2, 5-1 Mt. Hood) on their homecoming game and he got off to a fast start, throwing a 39-yard pass to senior Greyson Jouno for the first touchdown of the game.

He soon followed with a 20-yard scoring strike to senior Ronan Dooney. Sophomore Elijah Elliot followed those up with a seven yard touchdown carry.

The Scots (0-8, 0-6) struggled on both sides of the ball despite a standout performance from junior Michael Hodge on offense and defense. The Douglas offense couldn’t get anything going in the first quarter, punting twice and fumbling, and the defense was unable to contain the Rams, yielding all three touchdown drives on no more than three plays each.

Things got better for the Scots in the second quarter as junior quarterback Kevin Rodriguez-Nava threw a 69-yard pass to senior Jayden Proctor, but they were unable to score.

On their next drive, the Scots broke through for their only touchdown of the night on the same connection as Rodriguez-Nava hit Proctor for a 70-yard touchdown pass. Douglas failed on the two-point conversion but managed to get the two points back on a safety after Rodriguez-Nava threw an interception deep in Central Catholic territory.

Sophomore Miles Jackson got Central Catholic off to a strong start in the second quarter, taking the ball to the end zone on just two carries. After running 69 yards on the first play of the drive, Jackson went the final 10 yards on the next play to put the Rams into the end zone yet again.

Central Catholic switched quarterbacks at the quarter break, opting to go with sophomore star Cade Knighton. Knighton threw his first touchdown pass of the night to senior Austin Hill, a 47-yard pass.

Knighton also threw another rocket to senior Korbin Williams for a 50-yard touchdown reception. The Rams scored five touchdowns total in the second quarter, the fourth being a 20-yard carry from junior Greg Curtis. Elliot scored his second touchdown of the night off a 48-yard carry for what would be the final score of both the half and the game, ending it at 56-8.

Though there was no scoring in the second half, there was still some action on both sides of the ball. For the Scots, Rodriguez-Nava and Proctor had another 70-yard completion that was just shy of a touchdown.

Hodge and sophomore teammate Tre’Von Shepard each had a pair of 20-yard carries. Senior safety Andrey Ponomarev used his speed to make a shoestring tackle to keep Central Catholic out of the end zone in the third quarter. David Douglas also tried a few trick plays, including a flea-flicker that was almost caught for a first down.
