The San Lorenzo Valley girls basketball team came into Live Oak looking for its first win of the season, but following a 50-21 loss Thursday night, left with an eye on improving.
"Our season has been going kind of bad, but we have been working a lot on our man-to-man defense and we've really improved," said Kaitlyn Lotz, who led San Lorenzo Valley with nine points. "We are short-handed."
The Cougars have opened the season with five straight losses.
"As long as they play hard and have fun,” said coach Marcus Northcutt.
Unlike the Cougars, the Acorns (6-2) have started off the season with a point to prove.
“We’re considered the bottom of the barrel for our division,” said coach Mike Kiefer, whose team participates in the BVAL West Valley "C" Division. “When we step on the court, we walk on with a chip on our shoulder. We want respect. We are here to compete and we’re here to win.”
At half with a score of 32-7 and well on their way to their third straight victory, the Acorns weren’t ready to show mercy.
“Every game is a challenge no matter what the team’s record is. Tonight, we knew we were the better team,” said Kiefer. “We started strong and put them away early.”
Taking this as a warm up game for tomorrow's game against Fremont, freshman Fayth Lyon said,
“Tomorrow’s game will be a bit more difficult," said freshman Fayth Lyon, who led Live Oak with 20 points. "Tonight was a big warmup game which we needed in order to play tomorrow.”
Freshman Amy Gunther added nine points for Live Oak, which takes on Fremont Friday.
Kiefer seems confident about Live Oak’s future.
“We’re hoping it could translate to tomorrow to Fremont, which is a very good program," Kiefer said. "The next two games will put some things in perspective of what we have for a team and a program.”
