As a late November homecoming game led many to Terremere Field, Sequoia gave its fans reason to celebrate, beating The King’s Academy 48-13 in the Cherokees' final league game.
As a consequence of a rocky week in practice, it took Sequoia some time to get going. It wasn’t until the second quarter when both Dylan Anderson and Mikey Taylor scored, that Sequoia began to look more like the team Cherokee fans know.
“There were a lot of guys still dwelling (in practice) on last week’s loss,” Sequoia coach Rob Poulos said. “We keep telling the guys that we have to turn the page, win or lose, turn the page. I told the guys that that loss might have hurt more (against Menlo), but if you look in the books it’s the same loss that South City was. It doesn’t matter if we lose by six or if we lose by 60, turn the page and move on.”
After going up by 15 at halftime, Sequoia held the Knights to only one touchdown in the second half. The Cherokees, by contrast, scored four more times, as new faces got a chance to prove themselves to the coaches and fans.
Along with a Taylor to Anderson connection to put six on the board and an Anderson 2-yard TD run, junior Aaron Burns had a 65-yard touchdown run in the fourth and backup quarterback Cameron Greenough ran it into the end zone to contribute to the onslaught.
“If you translated those four days in practice into the four quarters, they had a sloppy first quarter then they turned it on and they had a good second quarter, good third quarter, and a good fourth quarter,” Poulos said. “That’s how the game played out, just like the practice week did.”
Sequoia (7-2, 3-2) looks now to beat the rival Carlmont Scots in a battle for the Terremere trophy and The King’s Academy (1-8, 1-4) hopes to finish strong in their final league game next week against Jefferson.
