Quick-starting Bruins ground Eagles

September 8, 2012

Soaring into their first game of the season, the Los Altos Eagles were looking to open on a high note with new head coach Rudy Alcala.

Unfortunately for Los Altos, along came Santa Clara, whose strong offense blew the Eagles away in the first half. The Bruins scored eight first-half touchdowns in a 53-8 victory.

Right from the start, running back Edwin Munguia demonstrated his nimbleness, weaving through a sea of Los Altos defenders to return the opening kickoff 80 yards for the Bruins’ first score.

From that point on, Santa Clara was unstoppable: the Bruins scored three more touchdowns in the first quarter, led off by a 30-yard run by Dajon Thomas.

Trailing 14-0 with nearly nine minutes left in the first quarter, Los Altos attempted to put some points on the scoreboard. However, on third-and-13 on the Los Altos 49-yard line, quarterback Lambie Lanman’s long pass was intercepted by linebacker Lexis Sanchez. Running Back Adam Garza and Thomas each scored touchdowns before the quarter ended, giving Santa Clara a 27-0 lead.

The Bruins led 53-0 at halftime.

Los Altos didn't score until the beginning of the fourth quarter, when their longest drive set them up nicely for a touchdown. On second-and-goal with seven yards to go, Lanman completed a touchdown pass to receiver Victor Galvez.

Santa Clara goes for its third consecutive victory, against The King’s Academy (0-2), on Friday, Sept. 14 at 7 p.m. Los Altos hopes to bounce back against host Sacred Heart Prep on Saturday, Sept. 15 at 1 p.m.
