NAPA, CA - The Napa High girls basketball team won its Monticello Empire League game vs Rodriguez 54-40 on Tuesday night. Coming in they were already 1-0 in MEL play, after a 66-23 rout over Wood. Meantime, Rodriguez stunned Vacaville. Napa came into this week being ranked on the bubble of the prep2prep.com NorCal rankings.
The score really didn’t reflect how close of a game this was, as Napa was down 13-8 after one, and 25 -19 at the half, before Napa (16-2, 2-0) took a 35-31 lead after three quarters.
Leading the way for Napa were Madison Van Zandt with 15 points and 11 rebounds and Gianna Gagetta with 14 points and eight rebounds. For Rodriguez (8-11, 1-1), Brianna Hayles scored nine points.
“I think our team had really good composure tonight," Napa coach Darci Ward said. "We were down five at halftime , and we were in foul trouble the whole night, so I thought it was just really good game for us.”
Said Napa junior guard Riley Pridmore: “I think that tonight the team battled really well. We wanted it more than them, and it definitely showed."
Napa hosts Vacaville at 7 p.m. on Friday in their third game of MEL play.
