KENTFIELD - Quarterback Michael Ingrassia, running back Matteo Perez and wide receiver Gaven Cooke led Marin Catholic to a 35-9 rout over Archbishop Mitty on Saturday afternoon, as the Wildcats bounced back from a loss to McClymonds the previous week.
Mitty actually took an early lead when its first drive resulted in a field goal, but Marin Catholic (2-1) took the lead for good on its second possession of the game. Ingrassia hit all three of his pass attempts on the drive, while Perez ran for 51 yards on three carries, including a 21-yard jaunt to get the Wildcats into the end zone for a 7-3 lead. Ingrassia was even better on the next Marin Catholic possession, hitting on all five pass attempts, including a touchdown pass to Cooke to make the score 14-3.
Mitty (1-1) appeared as if it could cut into the lead on the ensuing Monarchs' possession, when quarterback Shamir Bey completed a string of passes, including a 14-yarder to Reymello Murphy, but a pair of sacks ended the drive, and the Wildcats wasted no time extending the lead as soon as they got their hands on the ball, as Ingrassia connected with Spencer Lauer for a 37-yard touchdown pass and a 21-3 advantage at the break.
Marin Catholic started off the half in control of the ball and the game, and put it away for good early in the third quarter when Ingrassia called his own number on a 19-yard touchdown run for an insurmountable 28-3 advantage.
Mitty's next two drives both showed promise for the Monarchs, but both ended with turnovers. First, Cooke picked off Bey to thwart a Mitty possession, and the next Monarchs' drive ended with a sack and strip by Jamar Sekona, with the Wildcats recovering the loose ball. Mitty finally got back on the board early in the fourth, when Bey connected with Murphy for a 29-yard score to make the score 28-9. Perez, however, proceeded to carry the ball six times on the next drive, racking up 77 yards on the drive and the game's final touchdown. He would finish the game with 187 yards on the ground.
“We were just focused on cleaning up our mistakes and continuing to improve,” said Marin Catholic head coach Mazi Moayed.
Marin Catholic is now on the road for its next three games, beginning against Monterey, at Monterey Peninsula College, next Friday. Mitty faces Oakland on Friday, at Foothill College.
