It may have taken a little more than a quarter, but Monterey got untracked against North Monterey County on Friday, scoring 28 straight points on its way to the 42-9 victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, North Monterey County took the lead early in the second on a 20-yard field goal by Joseph Bertao. The Toreadores took the lead three minutes later, when Darius Garrard scored on a six-yard rush. Janias Thomas extended the lead to 14-3 at the half with his 45-yard touchdown run.
Halfway through the third quarter, Eris Hutchins broke loose for a 70-yard touchdown run, and Tim Byrd closed the quarter with a four-yard scoring run, giving Monterey a 28-3 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
The Condors temporarily closed the gap to 28-9, but Hutchins wasted no time extending it once again, returning the ensuing kickoff 85 yards for a touchdown.
