Big fifth inning propels Leigh past Westmont

April 18, 2013

The Leigh softball team beat Westmont 5-2 Tuesday afternoon, scoring three runs in the fifth inning. The win enabled the Longhorns (15-4, 6-1 BVAL-MH) to remain in a three-way tie for first place in the Blossom Valley Athletic League Mount Hamilton Division; the Warriors (9-10, 2-4) dropped into fifth place.

Alexis Lindsey had a key hit for the Longhorns in the fifth inning, driving in two runs with a double. Marissa Dierkes followed with a solid hit to right field to score Lindsey.

“Right now we have a freshman that’s really standing out," said Leigh coach Clovis Mirassou, pointing out that Lindsey has the highest batting average on the team. "She’s done a great job."

Lindsey and Marissa Dierkes both went 2-for-3 at the plate and had two runs batted in for the Longhorns. Katie Stamps and Lyndsi Garcia each had one hit.

Stamps pitched a gem, allowing six hits, striking out two and walking three.

The Warriors did not score until the fifth inning when they took advantage of a Longhorn error to cut the lead to 2-1. However, Stamps managed to avoid further damage and finished strong, allowing just another single run in the sevventh.

Leigh, which lost to Santa Teresa 3-0 on Thursday, is back in action next Tuesday at home against Sobrato. Westmont hosts Pioneer on Friday.
