The Branham softball team defeated visiting Leigh 16-3 Thursday.
Branham sophomore pitcher Marie Minteer had a tough time hitting her spots and, when she did, the Longhorns would find a hole.
For both teams the biggest inning was the second, where Leigh scored seven runs and batted around, and where Branham (3-2) scored two of its three runs.
Although Branham did not have many runs, it hit the ball hard, but didn't have much to show for it. However, Branham sophomore Megan Hackleman was able to find some gaps, going 3 for 3, with a double and two singles.
"I think everybody wants to perform well and do their job to the best of their ability," Hackleman said. "Every time I take the field I know that I will play the best I can, and that's all I can ask for."
For Leigh (2-1) two players really stood out, sophomore Lizzie Haskell and senior Marissa Dierkes. Both hit home runs to lead an offense that overpowered the Bruins.
Despite the two long balls, Leigh played more on the small-ball side, advancing runners with sacrifices and singles.
Branham only committed two errors, so Leigh was able to earn most of its runs.
Branham is at Westmont at 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. Leigh hosts Prospect at 3:30 Tuesday.
