NCS Senior of the Year
DEVYN GILFOY, LIBERTY
A first-team All-BVAL selection and Pepperdine commit, Gilfoy was arguably the most dangerous offensive weapon in the entire section and possibly in all of Northern California.
The 5-foot-11 striker tormented opposing defenses all season, finishing the year with 19 goals and 17 assists, including five goals and four assists during Liberty’s four playoff games, as the Lions concluded the year with a 3-2 victory over Carondelet in the NCS Division I championship game.
“Offensively, she is one of the best players I have ever coached,” said Liberty coach Tony Martins. “It is very tough for defenders to take the ball from her, and she is a very active finisher.”
Gilfoy, who has been a key figure on both of Liberty’s section championship teams in the last three years, was especially dominant against the Lions’ top competition. She scored twice in the team’s time-shortened, indoor loss to Marcus-Texas at the National Elite Prep Showcase, and twice more in a 3-2 win over Freedom that threatened the program’s three-year unbeaten streak in BVAL play. And while she did not score a goal in every game this season, she kept every goalie the Lions faced on her toes, putting shots on goal in every match this year.
In the playoffs, Gilfoy was virtually unstoppable. After registering assists on two of the team’s three goals in a first-round win over Clayton Valley, she scored one goal against San Ramon Valley in the quarterfinals, and then completed a hat trick in the 6-1 semifinal win over Monte Vista.
In the championship against Carondelet, she hammered home a free kick early in the second half to tie the game, then assisted Delanie Sheehan on the go-ahead goal, and was there again on a long throw-in to see the ball into the net.
Other players considered for this award: Las Lomas’ Haley Brown, Bishop O’Dowd’s Reina Bonta, and Branson’s Francesca Camahort.
