CCS Senior of the Year
AMAYA ZABALZA, ARCHBISHOP MITTY
The UC Santa Barbara bound Zabalza not only led the Monarchs in goals scored this season with eight, but she also contributed meaningful shots into the net, including twice scoring the only goal in 1-0 victories.
Zabalza had Mitty’s only goal during WCAL victories over both Sacred Heart Cathedral and Saint Francis, and assisted on the team’s only goal in the CCS Open Division final against Mountain View.
In fact, Zabalza contributed to goals in all three of the Monarchs’ section playoff games. She had a pair of assists in a quarterfinal win over Salinas, and scored a goal in the semifinal win over Menlo-Atherton.
The senior standout showcased her ability to score against the top competition from throughout the country while competing in the Tri-Valley Classic early this season. She scored four goals in the Monarchs’ three wins during the classic.
While Zabalza played all over the field for the Monarchs this season, attacking through the middle, she is expected to contribute at the college level as either an outside or central defender. She is a four-time All-WCAL selection during her career at Mitty.
Other players considered for this award: Leigh’s Emily Smith, Sacred Heart Cathedral’s Jo van Hasselt, Santa Clara’s Ellie Mujushi, Notre Dame-Belmont’s Luca Deza, and Menlo-Atherton’s Katie Guenin.
