Youthful dominance is a rare sight to see on the high school pitch, but for Prep2Prep’s Central Coast Section Sophomore of the Year Jillienne Aguilera, age means nothing.

The quick and agile sophomore forward from Woodside High School played an integral role in leading the Wildcats to a second straight CCS division title game by scoring a PAL-Bay leading 23 goals and 55 points this season.

Aguilera’s impressive sophomore season came after a freshman year in which she scored 15 goals and 34 points for the undefeated Wildcats. This season, however, Woodside’s 18-3-3 year ended in the CCS Division II championship game against Archbishop Mitty in a 2-0 loss.

One of the ways in which Aguilera displayed her leadership on the pitch was by showing off that she has the clutch gene. The forward scored game-winning goals against Homestead, San Mateo, Menlo-Atherton and Saratoga. The game-winner against Saratoga propelled the Wildcats into the CCS semifinals.

Aguilera was Woodside’s most valuable asset this season. She scored two or more goals in five games and averaged one goal per game.

“My favorite part about playing soccer is the rush I get when I score,” said Aguilera, “Soccer is just so fun to play knowing that there is a team beside you to back you up no matter what.”

Aguilera’s speed, aggressiveness, and vocality attracted the attention of many NCAA Division I colleges, and she has verbally committed to the University of Arizona.

College is a couple of years away for Aguilera, which gives her plenty of time to grow as a leader, get faster and stronger, and give Woodside a chance to continue their streak of dominance in the CCS.

Also considered: Carrie Wendelken, GK, Los Altos; Isabelle Berardo, GK, Saratoga; Erin McCoy, D, Leigh; Jacey Pederson, F, Palo Alto; Shaelan Murison, F, Santa Clara.

NOTE: We would like to thank our readers for all of the nominations you sent in for the season-ending CCS soccer awards. It is a daunting task to narrow down our selections to just the top few as we recognize there are lots of great players who make contributions on the court that are not necessarily well-documented but mean a great deal to the success of their teams. We salute all of the players that have made this a wonderful season of CCS soccer.
