Records are meant to be broken, but Prep2Prep’s Central Coast Section Junior of the Year Brittney Vela shatters them.

The speedy and aggressive forward from Branham put together an astounding record-breaking season in which she scored 24 goals, breaking the Branham school record easily.

Vela used her passion to score to lead Branham into the CCS semifinals. Her team made history by being the only girls soccer team at Branham to have made it that far into the CCS tournament.

“I wish we would have won, but it didn't hurt me that much,” Vela said, “I was so proud of my team that we made it that far.”

Despite leading her team and herself to a record-breaking season, Vela is not satisfied.

“Next season I look forward to being league champions," she said. "Also I look forward to beating my record of goals."

Vela was well deserving of awards for her performance this season. She was named the Blossom Valley Athletic League-Mount Hamilton Division Most Valuable Player and was also selected Most Valuable Player by her teammates.

Branham coach Ron Smare realizes the importance of having Vela on his team.

“She has the ability to focus on the positive and not let misses affect the next shot; extremely important for goal scorers,” said Smare.

According to Smare, Vela has the natural ability to score goals. Defenders are consistently put on their heels with her speedy and determined approach to the goal.

Branham is lucky to have Vela as an asset to break records and build a successful soccer program, and she leads her team in a humble manner.

“Soccer means the world to me," Vela said. "It's not just a sport, it's my life."
