CCS Freshman of the Year
RICARDO TOVAR HERRERA, MT. PLEASANT
It’s not too often that a freshman makes a huge impact for a successful program in boys’ athletics, but that was certainly the case at Mt. Pleasant this winter, where forward Ricardo Tovar Herrera led the Cardinals in points scored and had an immediate presence for a team which finished as the runner-up in the BVAL-Santa Teresa before making its way to the CCS Division II title game.
Tovar Herrera was also named the Freshman of the Year for the Santa Teresa Division, and was no doubt an easy selection. The striker notched 18 goals and 14 assists during the year, with five multi-goal performances. And his performances got better as the year wore on, especially when the eight-seed Mt. Pleasant squad made a run through the post-season.
In a first-round blowout win over San Jose, Tovar Herrera led the way to the 5-0 victory with a goal and an assist. In a tight, 2-1 quarterfinal win over top seed Soquel, the freshman sensation notched a key assist, but saved arguably his best performance for last. Facing four-seed Soledad in the semifinals, Tovar Herrera scored two goals and had an assist, leading the Cardinals to a 6-3 victory and a berth in the championship game against Sacred Heart Cathedral.
The fact that the young attacker played well against the best competition was, in fact, nothing new. The Cardinals may have finished one point behind Leland for the Santa Teresa title, but it certainly was not for lack of strong performances from Tovar Herrera. In a 2-1 win over the Chargers on January 2, he contributed to both goals, with a goal and an assist. Later, in a 3-2 loss that ultimately decided the division title, the freshman scored both of Mt. Pleasant’s goals against Leland.
For his efforts throughout the season, we are pleased to recognize Ricardo Tovar Herrera as our Central Coast Section Freshman of the Year.
Other players considered for this award include King’s Academy’s Augustin Perez and Bellarmine’s Paxton Hall.
