UPDATED 3/6/2016
Neither of the finalists in the first-ever Central Coast Section Open Division tournament won its respective league title, a No. 8 seed could be considered the favorite
to capture Division I and a No. 13 seed just ousted a No. 16 seed in the semifinals in Division II. Such is the wild, unpredictable nature of the 2015-16 CCS boys
soccer season.
OPEN DIVISION:
Watsonville and Mitty settled for a co-championship after a 0-0 tie through regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Watsonville had the overall better of the run
of play, but the Wildcatz were unable to score against sophomore goalkeeper Matt Rose, a late-season call-up from the junior varsity who registered seven saves.
“I’m just happy,” Rose told Prep2Prep. “It was a good season and we could’ve won it, but we get the banner and that’s what matters.”
Watsonville held a 12-7 shot advantage (7-4 on goal) and had an 11-1 advantage on corner kicks.
“We played pretty good we just couldn’t quite finish,” Watsonville coach Roland Hedgpeth said. “We stayed in there and didn’t let them score. Our defense did
outstanding and our goalie (Cristian Hernandez) did outstanding.”

YERBA BUENA (0-0-0)
Tuesday 7 pm, Leigh High School
The championship game was scheduled for Saturday night, but harsh field and weather conditions forced a postponement. The game is likely to be played on Tuesday.
Senior Juan Carrillo continued his postseason run with a pair of goals to lift Lincoln over Yerba Buena. Carrillo, who scored on an outstanding individual run in the quarterfinals
against Mountain View, notched his goals in the first half as the Lions held a 2-1 lead at the break.
All the goals were scored in the first half in the other semifinal as well, with Alvarez prevailing 2-1 over Christopher. It was the third straight one-goal win by the
Eagles, the fourth-place finishers from the MBL-Gabilan Division. Pajaro Valley is the only common opponent, as Lincoln lost 2-0 to the Grizzlies and Alvarez tied 2-2
and lost 2-1.
DIVISION II:
While one side of the bracket completely blew up, pre-tournament favorite Sacred Heart Cathedral took care of business on its side, coasting through to the finals
by a 6-1 aggregate score culminating with a 2-0 win over Scotts Valley.
Prospect will be looking for its second CCS title under coach Frank Medina after dispatching Menlo 1-0 in the other semifinal. The Irish are in search of their second
consecutive CCS title.

PROSPECT (0-0-0)
Tuesday 7 pm, Leigh High School
The championship game was scheduled for Saturday afternoono, but harsh field and weather conditions forced a postponement. The game is likely to be played on Tuesday.
One thing is for certain and that is you can ignore the seedings when it comes to this CCS championship. Prospect is the No. 13 seed but is currently ranked
14th in the latest Prep2Prep CCS Top 25. The Panthers (18-4-1) have more wins than any other team in CCS and have been ranked as high as the Top 10.
Wednesday's 1-0 semifinal win over Menlo was keyed by a long throw-in from the left side just moments before the halftime whistle. Senior Matt Biner latched
onto a loose ball and shot the ball through a crowd for the only goal of the match.
Prospect was the much stronger team in the first half and had several opportunities to score, sparked by outstanding play in the midfield. But Menlo did not go
down without a fight in the second half, as the Knights were the aggressors after the break. The best chance of the second half fell to the feet of freshman
Ben Lasky, but he just wasn't able to get enough power on a shot from close range late in the match.
Sacred Heart Cathedral got first-half goals from Greyson Gerhard-Young and Derian Martinez to cruise past Scotts Valley 2-0 in the other semifinal. The Irish
will certainly not be looking past the Panthers, who defeated SHC's main rival St. Ignatius 2-1 in the quarterfinals.
Like most WCAL teams, Sacred Heart Cathedral
employs a 4-3-3 with speedy wingers and strong central midfield players. The Irish also boast one of the top defenses in the section. Prospect likes to possess
the ball out of its 4-5-1 formation and talented midfielders, led by Biner.
Prospect enjoys the edge when it comes to common opponents. In addition to beating St. Ignatius - which tied SHC twice - the Panthers beat St. Francis 2-0. The Irish
tied St. Francis 0-0 both times the teams met. Prospect also beat Riordan 2-0 - SHC beat the Crusaders 3-0 both times - as the Panthers look to complete a perfect
record against WCAL competition.
