CCS Sophomore of the Year
ANGEL NEVAREZ, MF, SOUTH SAN FRANCISCO

Versatility is a virtue for South San Francisco's Angel Nevarez, the Warriors' star 10th-grade midfielder.

"He plays more as an attacking midfielder, but also does an excellent job recovering the ball defensively," Warriors coach Daniel Flores said. "Angel is a versatile player, most of his goals were powerful shots from outside the penalty box (and he was) one of our top leaders in regards to assists. He was our go-to player for penalty kicks and an overall leader on the field."

Nevarez proved his worth, scoring 13 goals as a sophomore after also starting on varsity his freshman season. He also had an assist for the 12-7-3 Warriors. For his efforts, he is the Prep2Prep Central Coast Section Sophomore of the Year.

His outstanding play helped South City to a 10-2-2 record in the PAL-Ocean, as the Warriors finished just behind first-place El Camino (10-1-3) in the standings. However, Nevarez helped defeat visiting El Camino in a rivalry showdown game, 2-0. The Warriors' talented midfielder assisted on both goals.

In its other rivalry game against El Camino, SSF trailed by two goals and was competing with just nine players when it rallied for a 3-3 tie at Skyline College.

Following the season, Nevarez was named the PAL-Ocean's Midfielder of the Year.

"I just love the sport and I love working together as a team," Nevarez said. "A team can have a star, but a star doesn't make a team. The whole team has to be good. You need a good group effort."

Nevarez is also no slouch in the classroom. He has a B-minus average, is on track to go to college and has a Student of the Month award to his credit, Flores said.

"My goal is to get into college and get a scholarship," Nevarez said.

Also considered: Luke Newquist, MF, St. Francis.
