P2P CCS Football Top 25

Prep2Prep CCS Rankings

THROUGH WEEK 6

October 4, 2023

One of the biggest storylines of the young season has been the play of transfer-laden Archbishop Riordan, which has burst out of the gates in the WCAL all the way up to the No. 2 ranking in CCS. But let's not also forget to tip a cap for the work being done at Hillsdale, which is 5-0 and up to No. 16 in the latest Prep2Prep CCS Top 25.

Note: Last week's rankings in parentheses

Senior QB Maealiuaki Smith completed 19-of-28 passes for 320 yards and two touchdowns to lead Serra to a surprisingly one-sided 45-17 win over Saint Francis. The Padres, who visit Mitty Friday night, aren’t likely to get a serious challenge until October 21 when Archbishop Riordan comes to San Mateo.

The Crusaders surge up to the No. 2 spot following a surprisingly easy 42-17 win over Valley Christian to join Serra as the only 2-0 teams in the WCAL. Next up for Riordan is a trip to San Jose to take on Bellarmine

Saint Francis dropped to 2-3 overall with a 45-17 running-clock loss to Serra, but the losses have come against three of the top teams in California (Helix and De La Salle are the others). The Lancers host St. Ignatius Friday night.

Senior RB Boxer Kopcsak-Yeung rushed for 108 yards and 2 TDs on 20 carries, but the Wildcats fell short in an upset bid, losing 37-27 to Pittsburg. Los Gatos begins PAL-Bay play Friday night at home against Sacred Heart Prep.

The Warriors lost for the first time this season, fallkng 42-17 to Archbishop Riordan. The game was close early, but Valley Christian had no answer for sophomore QB Michael Mitchell Jr, who threw 6 TD passes. Valley Christian is expected to get back on track Friday at home against winless Sacred Heart Cathedral.

The fact that Aptos won its PCAL-Gabilan opener was not a surprise but a 68-6 victory over an Alvarez team coming off an upset of Hollister was certainly an eye-opener. The Mariners visit Salinas Thursday night in one of the biggest games of the year in the PCAL.

Senior AJ Cenizal rushed for 71 yards and 2 TDs in a 35-27 win over Sacred Heart Cathedral. The Monarchs host Serra Friday night.

Senior Tyson Bonilla completed 9 of 12 passes for 80 yards and rushed for 208 yards and 4 TDs in a 45-14 win over Mountain View in Wilcox's PAL-Bay opener. The Chargers visit Menlo-Atherton Friday night.

Salinas was off last week and had an extra week to prepare for an Aptos team expected to contend along with the Cowboys for the top spot in the PCAL-Gabilan. Both teams come in at 2-3, but the records are misleading considering the level of competition each team has faced

Senior QB Mikey McGrath completed 11 of 13 passes for 219 yards and 4 TDs in a 55-22 win over Homestead. Next up for Menlo is a trip to Palo Alto Friday night.

SI did ultimately improve to 3-1 (1-1 WCAL), but the Wildcats needed late-game heroics to knock off Bellarmine, 31-30. SI visits Saint Francis Friday night in a battle of two teams expected to finish in the top half of the WCAL.

Just when it seemed like Monterey was on the verge of contending for one of the top spots in the CCS rankings, the Dores came crashing down in a 21-7 upset loss at Soquel. It was the first loss of the season for Monterey, which looks to right the ship Saturday at home against Hollister.

Palma needed overtime, but edged rival Hollister 31-30 to remain alive in the wild PCAL-Gabilan race. The Chieftains are off this week before traveling to Aptos October 12.

The Bells (1-4, 0-2 WCAL) have shown signs of breaking through, but after opening the season with a win over Menlo-Atherton, have now suffered four defeats in a row. The latest was the closest, a 31-30 defeat at St. Ignatius. Bellarmine gets a shot at Archbishop Riordan Friday night at home.

The Bears were off last week and open PAL-Bay play with a major test against No. 8 Wilcox Friday night in Atherton.

Hillsdale continued its amazing early-season run with a 31-15 win over Half Moon Bay in its PAL-De Anza opener. Senior Erick Waugh completed 11 of 17 passes for 183 yards and 3 TDs. Next up is a trip to Homestead Friday night.

Senior Anthony Noto rushed for 92 yards and 3 TDs in a 41-7 win over Burlingame. The Gators get a shot at league favorite Los Gatos Friday night.

Christopher was off last week and puts its undefeated mark on the line Friday night at Oak Grove.

Live Oak was off last week and opens BVAL-Mount Hamilton play at home against Lincoln.

Carmel improved to 6-0 overall (2-0 in the PCAL-Mission South) with a 50-36 win at North Salinas. The Padres visit Rancho San Juan Friday night.

Soquel races into the rankings on the strength of a 21-7 upset of Monterey. The Knights travel to Salinas Friday night to take on Alvarez.

Capuchino remained unbeaten with a 24-7 win at Terra Nova. The Mustangs visit Milpitas in an early battle of two of the top teams in the PAL-Ocean Division.

North Salinas suffered its second loss of the season, 50-36 at home against Carmel. Both of the Vikings' losses have come by two touchdowns to ranked teams. Next up is a trip to King City Friday night.

Mountain View dropped its PAL-Bay opener, 45-14, at Wilcox. The Spartans continue league play Friday night at home against Burlingame.

It may seem odd for an 0-5 team to remain in the top 25 but truth be told there are very few teams in CCS that would fare any better than the Irish have against their five opponents. The latest loss came in a tight one, 35-27, at Archbishop Mitty. SHC is unlikely to get its first win at Valley Christian Friday night and will be hard-pressed to win any of its remaining games.
