THROUGH WEEK 1
In this unprecedented high school football season, rankings are more challenging than ever. But with most teams in action this past weekend, the overall CCS picture has become at least a little clearer with defending champion Serra once again atop the roost.

The Padres earned a hard-fought 33-26 victory over Valley Christian. Serra QB Dominique Lampkin threw for 216 yards and ran for 71 and highly regarded receiver Hassan Mahasin had six catches for 104 yards and 2 TDs.
Valley Christian had a shot at the No. 1 spot after recovering an onside kick with just over a minute remaining, but Serra's Fynn Williams strip sack was recovered by teammate Sioeli Helu to wrap up the victory for the Padres.
The Lancers held on for a 24-19 win over San Benito behind a pair of 100-yard rushers. Senior Adonis Hernandez rushed for 128 yards on 15 carries and junior Camilo Arquette added 111 yards and a touchdown on 13 attempts.
Running back Adam Garwood ran for four first-half touchdowns as Los Gatos had no trouble in a 45-0 rout of Milpitas to open SCVAL play. Garwood finished with 131 yards on 11 carries and sophomore Andres Curiel added 92 yards on 19 carries.
Mitty has had its opener delayed until this week after a positive COVID test on the coaching staff of The King's Academy led to a no contest. The Monarchs jump right into the fire, opening WCAL play at No. 2 Valley Christian.
Wilcox rushed for 392 yards in an impressive season-opening 56-28 win over Palo Alto. Junior Luther Glenn led the way with 14 carries for 109 yards and 4 TDs and senior Jason Guerrero chipped in with 92 yards and 2 TDs on 10 carries.
As one of the few 2-0 teams in Northern California, the Gators are off to a strong start. Defense has been key in wins over Aragon and Burlingame, as SHP has yielded just 12 points following a 17-0 shutout of the Panthers. Six different players have registered one sack apiece.
M-A opened the season with an impressive 36-20 win a solid Half Moon Bay team. Junior QB Matt MacLeod completed 11-of-14 passes for 310 yards and 4 TDs, including two to junior Jalen Ross (2 catches, 76 yards, 2 TDs).
Oak Grove once again looks like the team to beat in the BVAL following a 45-0 win at Overfelt. Next up is a showdown against Piedmont Hills.
The Bells nearly pulled off a huge win in Coach Jalal Beauchman's debut, but they let a 21-0 lead get away in a 28-21 loss to Sac-Joaquin Section power Central Catholic. Junior QB Wade Smith completed 15-of-23 passes for 181 yards and a TD.
Salinas opened the season with a rare Tuesday afternoon home game, as the Cowboys knocked off Alvarez, 21-6. Senior Jeff Shaffer led the way with 137 yards and 2 TDs and younger brother Alan, a sophomore, quarterbacked the team, tossing a touchdown pass to Anthony Lacovara.
San Benito nearly pulled off the upset, scoring a fourth-quarter touchdown to pull within 24-19 of Saint Francis. The Balers got 17 tackles from junior Mateo Reyes and a 65-yard touchdown run from senior Primo Reyes.
Palma opens the season in a non-league game Friday at San Joaquin Memorial.
Aptos opened the season with a 49-13 non-league win at Monte Vista Christian. The Mariners host Soquel Friday night.
The Wildcats open the season Friday at home against San Francisco rival Archbishop Riordan in their WCAL opener.
Half Moon Bay is off to a 1-1 start in the competitive PAL-Bay following a 36-20 defeat at the hands of Menlo-Atherton.
The Vikings ran into a buzzsaw in a 56-28 loss against Wilcox in their SCVAL opener. Paly looks to get back on track Saturday at home against Mountain View.
The King's Academy had its season opener called off because of a postiive COVID test and will look to start its season Friday against PAL-Bay rival Sacred Heart Prep.
The Chargers stamped themselves as BVAL contenders with a season-opening 35-14 win over Lincoln. Junior QB Nathan Wright completed 9-of-12 passes for 105 yards and 2 TDs and junior RB Mark Ely rushed for 188 yards and 2 TDs on 25 carries.
The Panthers are 0-2, but the losses have come against Half Moon Bay and Menlo-Atherton, two of the top teams in CCS. Offense has been a challenge for the Panthers as theyi have amassed just 343 total yards in two games.
Christopher hammered Branham, 55-6, to open the season as senior RB Logan Stelling stole the show with 12 carries for 282 yards and 4 TDs. The Cougars completed all 12 of their pass attempts for 123 yards and 3 TDs. Junior QB Spencer Gorgulho went 8-for-8 for 83 yards and 2 scores, but
Gilroy opens its season with a non-league clash at Leigh on Saturday.
The Crusaders opened the season with a 34-20 win over WCAL rival Sacred Heart Cathedral. Riordan completes the San Francisco circuit Saturday at St. Ignatius.
Leigh looks like a contender for the BVAL-Santa Teresa crown following a 41-8 win over Ann Sobrato. Senior RB Max Griffiths led a balanced rushing attack with 106 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries.
The Pirates opened BVAL play with a 27-20 win over rival Santa Teresa. Junior RB Isaac Nirza led the way with 138 yards and a touchdown on 22 carries.
