Riordan roars past overmatched Salesian

September 3, 2017

Riordan bounced back from a season-opening loss to Central Catholic-Modesto by racing past Salesian on Saturday, winning 42-7.

Quarterback Travis Benham had a monstrous day for the Crusaders, throwing for a school-record 410 yards and five touchdowns. The latter mark tied a school record, while the yardage smashed the previous record of 367, set in 2007 by Darius Bell in the playoffs against Terra Nova.

Sophomore receiver Je'Lani Clark, a dual-sport standout at Riordan, had a huge day on the other end of Benham's passes. His 96-yard touchdown reception is the second-longest play in school history, and he finished the game with five catches for 193 yards and two scores.

Clark's long reception, which occurred in the third quarter, was hardly the only big play of the day for the Crusaders. Mel Faaleava opened the game with a 58-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, and with under five minutes remaining in the first quarter, Max Mazie hauled in an 87-yard touchdown pass, making it 14-0 at the time. Jordon Fox's 55-yard touchdown reception from Benham made the score 21-0 by the end of the first quarter.

Mezie later added a 68-yard scoring reception. Those were his only two catches of the game, totaling 155 yards for the two scores.

Salesian's only touchdown came on a 12-yard fumble return by Xavier Matthews in the fourth quarter.
