November 29, 2015

NEWARK, CA — Normally the Prep2Prep Tip-off Classic has been used as a catalyst to showcase some of the better teams in Northern California, but this year the tournament hosts decided to leave a mark of their own.

Newark Memorial High, once again hosts of the ninth annual Prep2Prep Tip-Off Classic, put on a show of its own.

The host Cougars rallied from a five-point deficit with one minute left in regulation to force overtime and rode its momentum to a 78-68 overtime victory against Woodcreek Saturday night.

Guard Decaurey Brown earned MVP of the game honors, scoring a team-high 23 points including 16 that game in the fourth quarter and overtime.

Newark Memorial 6-foot-10 center Kevin Kahriman had a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds, Mazae Boyd added 13 points and eight rebounds while Lovelle Shackelford chipped in with 10 points.

Newark Memorial was able to withstand Woodcreek sophomore center Jordan Brown who put on an absolute show for the fans who came out to watch the ninth gathering of the event as the 6-10 Brown had game-highs in points, rebounds and blocked shots with 33, 18 and six, respectively.

Alex Patton was the only other player for the Timberwolves to score in double-digits with 11 points.

Newark Memorial (1-0) trailed Woodcreek (0-1) 31-29 at the half.

Rai Reyes Bennett made consecutive free throws — his only two free throws of the game — to tie the game 64-64 with 17.2 seconds left in regulation.
