Trio of new coaches for Alhambra

June 28, 2015

Alhambra has hired three new winter sports coaches.

Jason Bautista is the new girls’ basketball coach, Anthony Ertola is taking over the boys’ basketball program and Ed Marinelli is the new girls’ soccer coach.

Bautista is going from being the junior varsity boys’ coach at Alhambra to girls’ coach. He replaces Sara Pippo who is getting married and pursuing a Masters’ degree.

“Jason played at Alhambra and he’s local,” Alhambra athletic director Pat Ertola said. “He’ll give us some continuity. We were saddened but supportive when the previous coach resigned.”

Anthony Ertola is the son of AD Pat Ertola. Like Bautista, Ertola played basketball for his father at Alhambra and also played football at Alhambara and Willamette University where he was coached by fly offense gury Mark Speckman. He replaces Linsey Bailey who “decided to move on” according to AD Ertola.

“Again, he’ll give us some continuity,” Pat Ertola said. “He was the freshman coach for our kids who will be seniors next year and he has a good relationship with the junior high school.”

Anthony Ertola was formerly an assistant football coach at Menlo College. His grandfather, Dick Mannini, coached football at San Jose State, St. Mary's, Stanford and San Francisco State.

Marinelli replaces John Badger as the girls’ soccer coach after assisting at Alhambra for a few seasons and being the head coach at Mt. Diablo and an assistant at Acalanes. Ertola said Badger wants to take some time off.

Regarding Marinelli, Ertola said “He has a nice background.”
