MURPH'S PLACE: Area coaches thrilled to guide Wedemeyer teams

March 23, 2015

Pioneer's Eric Perry and Fremont's Jake Messina will be the coaches in the Charlie Wedemeyer high school all star football game on Aug. 1.

Perry will guide the South and Messina the North.

"I'm excited and honored to be chosen," Perry said. "It will be a lot of work but I've been able to secure my (Pioneer) staff and Mark Krail and a few of his Los Gatos coaches will be helping out."

Perry, a former Pioneer player who played in the 1990 Wedemeyer game, was Krail's defensive coordinator for 12 years at Pioneer.

Messina is also tickled to be leading one of the teams.

“I’m honored and humbled,” he said. “I’m just a kid from Redwood City who was lucky enough to play in the Redwood City Rotary Game in San Mateo County when I was in high school. To be able to coach in this game is an amazing deal.”

Sequoia coach Rob Poulos will be one of the coaches assisting Messina.

NEW BEARS' COACH: Adhir Ravipati has been named the new football coach at Menlo-Atherton. He replaces Sione Taufoou, who resigned after five years as the coach.

Ravipati has served as the offensive coordinator for at least portions of the last three seasons. He has also assisted with the Bears' basketball team.

"I think he'll do fine," Taufoo said. "He's a great guy and an awesome person whose heart is i n the right place. He's smart and organized and has the kids in mind first."

A multi sport athlete at The Harker School, Ravipati also played two years of college football for the University of San Diego.

GATOR COACH HONORED: Sacred Heart Prep football coach Pete Lavorato continues to collect accolades. Lavorato, after leading the Gators to the CCS Open Division title in 2014, has won the Positive Coaching Alliance's Double Goal Coach Award given by TeamSnap due to his positive impact on his players.

Lavorato, a former Canadian Football League player, is one of 25 recipients across the nation of the Double-Goal award, emblematic of coaches who try to win while also conveying life lessons through athletics.

"It's nice because of the criteria it stresses which is how you coach, the means not just the results," Lavorato said. "I think it's important to (the PCA) that you win some games, but it's more important that you use your coaching to help young people become better people. We want our young men to become better young men."

The honor includes a $250 prize, a trophy and mentions in the PCA newsletters and on its websites.

Lavorato is also one of four of the winning coaches who will appear on-stage for a panel discussion led by former US soccer star Julie Foudy as part of PCA's 14th Annual National Youth Sports Awards Dinner and Auction sponsored by Deloitte, held April 25 in Palo Alto.

Briefly: Napa's Kyle Hawk will run cross country and track for Connecticut College ... Noon Saturday at AT&T Park is the rubber match of the Bruce/Mahoney athletic competition between St. Ignatius and Sacred Heart Cathedral, in this case a baseball game between the Wildcats and Fightin' Irish ... Serra grad and all time big league home run king Barry Bonds this spring will be inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame.
